Adam Hemlock rules the elite New Harbor Academy. With his mother in Paris, he throws hedonistic, alcohol- and drug-fueled parties for his equally rich, desperately bored classmates. How’s a guy who lives life to the extreme to stay entertained? Take on a challenge, of course, and hope the exhilaration of the play-by-play fallout chases away the indifference. At the big pre-senior-year bash, Adam’s offered a dare—seduce the new kid. Adam initially laughs off the idea but changes his mind when he sees Jared.
Jared Rawell has spent the past two years at a Texas military school, where his father sent him to “pray away the gay.” He sees the academy in more liberal Washington as a chance to start over and achieve the grades he needs to get into an Ivy League school. When a beautiful but terrifying girl offers Jared a deal—don’t sleep with Adam Hemlock and she’ll help Jared get through senior year—he sees no reason to say no. But nothing is as simple as it seems.
With layers of hidden agendas, backstabbing, lying, cheating, drugs, and entitled teenage egos, Jared and Adam must navigate a high school minefield while waiting for the inevitable explosion.
REVIEW:
I LOVED this book!!!!!!! It was so damn good. From the moment that I started it I was hooked. At first I was hesitant about this story because I just haven’t really been a fan of High School romance in the m/m genre but what Anna Martin has done is made this story about teenagers but did it in a way that you actually forget these are kids in high school. This almost feels like college there’s very little parent interaction which I loved and appreciated.
Jared is the new kid in town. He’s very self assured for a teenage boy. It’s immediately apparent that he knows who he is and doesn’t waiver. He’s enrolled into an affluent high school where the in crowd rules the school. He goes to the new school year “it” party where he is befriended by Clare, one of the head honchos at the school. Clare is devious, conniving, and mean. She isn’t happy unless she’s meddling in someone’s life, twisting and turning it to how she sees fit. She basically tells Jared that if he can resist Adam, another head honcho at the school and the token gay guy, then she will ensure his senior year will go smoothly. Unbeknost to Jared, Clare has already concocted another scheme with Adam, betting him that he won’t be able to bed Jared.
You want to dislike Adam. He’s filthy rich, spoiled, entitled, bratty, and beautiful. There is something very likeable about him though. He is smart, he’s a good friend, he cares about the people around him and you warm up to him immediately.
Jared and Adam’s relationship starts as friends but quickly turns into something more. What I loved is you could really see their feelings grow towards each other. It wasn’t instalove, we as readers had to work for this relationship.
The plot twist was something we’ve seen before but this is written in such a unique way that it doesn’t seem contrived. After the truth comes out to Jared about Adam’s bet there are hurt feelings, but both Adam and Jared are too far gone with each other. I absolutely adored these two together once the truth was out. I kept forgetting that they were teenagers, they were so right for each other.
Another thing this author does so well is make the “mean girl” clique likeable. They were without a doubt bratty bitches but they cared about their friends and I found that incredibly endearing. Even Clare, who you want to hate, I didn’t. This author is also a genius at building colorful, engaging characters. I loved this supporting cast so much. Each one of them added another element to the story that made it that much more rich.
I really want more of Adam and Jared. I’d love to see how they do at staying a couple while attending different colleges.
This is a must read and I highly recommend!!!
