BLURB:

Max moved away from his family to be with Michael, and his family never got over it. Now, for the first time in almost a decade, he’s going to return to London for the Christmas celebrations. He’s confident his family will welcome Michael with open, loving arms. At least that’s what he tells himself.

Michael doesn’t have his head buried in the sand. He knows he has a lot to prove this Christmas, and he’s not sure if he’s up to the task. All these years and he’d never considered having to spend a holiday with Max’s family. Now that it’s happening he’s not scared to admit it—he’s terrified.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2014 Advent Calendar package “Celebrate!”.

REVIEW:

Quite a Spectacle is the story of one man’s voyage to London with his partner of 8 years to spend their first ever Christmas with the partner’s family. Since Michael and Max met they’ve spent every Christmas at home in Toronto, celebrating the holiday with Michael’s family. Michael has barely met Max’s family who reside in London. On their prior visit, Michael managed to not only put a huge dent in Max’s dad’s BMW, but to also break some of Max’s mother’s china. He is, not surprisingly, dubious about their current visit.

When they arrive in the UK, Michael is suffering from motion sickness from the plane and shortly after Max’s parents pick them up at the airport, Michael throws up on the back floor of Max’s dad’s new Jaguar. What a way to start a Christmas visit!

What follows is an entertaining story of Michael trying to fit in with Max’s family. Max’s dad can’t stand him, and his mother doesn’t seem to like him much either. Throw in a couple siblings, and a bunch of aunts, uncles and cousins, and it is bound to be an experience that the two men won’t forget soon!

I enjoyed this story. I would recommend it either on its own, or as part of the Dreamspinner package.
