Welcome Jeff!!
Rivals: Something Old Becomes New
Thanks, Dani, for letting me stop by Love Bytes to discuss the re-release of Rivals. This story is very meaningful to me since it was my first story to become an ebook when I decided to make a serious go at writing. It’s been out of print for a little over a year now, and I’m excited that I have the opportunity to bring it back.
To thank everyone for stopping by today, I am giving away a free ebook copy of Rivals to one lucky commenter. I’ll also stop by while the giveaway is happening to answer any questions you all might have.
Rivals revolves around two guys who were fierce rivals in their high school days. They were centers for their school’s ice hockey teams. To say there strong competition between the schools, and between the players themselves, would be an understatement. There was also an unresolved crush: Mitchell Turner had it bad throughout high school for Alex Goodman. As the story opens, they run into each other Thanksgiving morning at an ice rink. They’re both college grads now, and they have a lot of catching up to do.
I enjoyed revisiting this story to prepare it to be re-introduced to the world. I cleaned up a few things that bothered me as I read over it again for the first time in a few years. It was also a chance to add a couple additional scenes. Originally it’d been written to come under a specific word count. Without that constraint, I added the new material, specifically boosting the role of Mitchell’s younger brother as a sounding board for what this re-connection could mean for Mitchell. There’s also an expansion of the ending so you get an even clearer idea of what the future holds for Mitchell and Alex. So for anyone who read this the first time out, there’s some new things for you if you pick up this new edition. Consider it almost like a director’s cut of a film.
Here’s a brief excerpt from one of Rivals’ new scenes. Mitchell and his still-in-college, brother Trevor are talking about a potential brunch double date before Mitchell goes back to California after Thanksgiving. The date would be Mitchell and Alex along with Trevor and his girlfriend, Julie.
BLURB:
Mitchell Turner and Alex Goodman squared off over a face-off dot throughout high school. Their schools were cross-country rivals. Those face-offs were tough on Mitchell because he harbored a huge crush on Alex. High school, and college, are behind the guys and they meet unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day, once again on the ice. Mitchell is home for the holidays and is thrilled to see his crush all grown up.
Alex asks Mitchell out for coffee to catch up. Could this be the start of something magical for the holidays … and beyond?
“A double date with my little brother? Hmmm. Okay. I’ll see if he’s into that.”
“I promise I’ll be on good behavior.” He sat up, cross-legged on the bed.
“Of everyone in the family, you’re the one I’m the least worried about embarrassing me. I have a greater chance of saying something stupid in front of Julie.”
“True,” he said, giving me a smirk.
I grabbed one of the pillows off the bed and smacked him in the face. He grabbed it before I could swing it another time and ended up taking it from me. He sprang up, stood on his bed and started pummeling me in the head. I grabbed another pillow and worked to block his attack. I wanted to jump up on the bed, but I also didn’t want to break it. He’d had this bed forever and I wasn’t sure what two adult-sized people jumping on it might do to it. We didn’t pillow battle long before we both collapsed on the bed in giggles.
“We haven’t done that in ages,” I said as we both maneuvered into sitting positions on the bed. “Good thing mom wasn’t here. I still don’t think she’d appreciate our roughhousing.”
“She never did, even when it was outside. At least dad always recognized a good natured brawl when he saw one.”
I nodded in agreement. “Very true. Hell, he usually egged us on.”
“You really like him, don’t you?” Trevor asked, pulling the conversation in a different direction.
“Yeah. I think I really do,” I said without hesitation. “I feel like I’ve known Alex forever, which in some ways I have, I guess. Last night was so comfortable. I’ve never had a date that was easy going, yet exciting at the same time.”
Trevor smiled, and it didn’t look like one of his sarcastic ones either. He was a good guy, but he did like to pull my chain sometimes.
“What?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he said, somewhat defensively. “Seriously, I’m glad last night was good. You’ve never sounded thrilled with anyone you’ve dated. It’s good to hear you so positive.”
“Except we live a couple thousand miles apart.”
“Move back?”
I knew he’d say that. He wasn’t happy when I moved west. He knew it was a great opportunity for me. He had designs on staying in the area and becoming an English teacher and was hoping I’d stay around and maybe work with one of the local sports teams.
I sighed. “I have to admit I’ve thought about it in the past twelve hours. Don’t get me wrong, I like Cali and my job, but it might be worth giving up to see what can work here. With him.”

[…] Tuesday Dec 9: Love Bytes […]
I’d love to read Rivals, thanks for the giveaway.
Sounds nice, I like cover specially. Thanks for the giveaway!
Sounds good. I really enjoyed Hat Trick and Hat Trick 2. I look forward to reading this book
This sounds like a very interesting book.
Oddly enough, I’ve never been a huge hockey fan. I would go to our local semi pro games and enjoy myself, but never really followed the sport. However, lately I’ve been gobbling up hockey themed romances. I’m definitely bumping this up closer to the top of my TBR pile.
Love the theme of the story and great cover.
SOunds great!!!!
Jeff Adams is a new-to-me author; great opportunity to check out his work 🙂
I’ve enjoyed other books that revolve around sports, hockey being one of them. This one sounds like one I’d really enjoy as well. Adding to my TBR list.
Thanks everyone for dropping by so far! It’s cool to see all this response.
@Serena: Glad you like the cover. I do too. It’s very strong and gives off that rivals sort of feel.
@Denise: Thanks for the Hat Trick shout outs 🙂
@Lindsayb: I hope you’ll give the Hat Trick series a look. It’s a romance that starts between two hockey players while their in high school and it follows them into college. I love books with hockey in them (probably obvious). Love to hear what some of your favorites are. I’ve also got a Goodreads shelf full of hockey books so I can keep track. You can see the shelf at https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/2337651-jeff-adams?shelf=hockey-books. Let me know if I’m missing anything good 🙂
Fantastic list! I’d also recommend Isa K’s HOW TO QUIT PLAYING HOCKEY (really great portrait of two ECHL guys at different points in their careers trying to make their relationship work–there’s a free prequel, too, possibly on Smashwords) and Heidi Belleau’s STRAIGHT SHOOTER (really makes you think about the connection between hockey and BDSM).
Glad you liked the list, Trix! I can’t believe I didn’t have “Straight Shooter” on there. I bought that from Heidi and GRL. I’ve added that and “How to Quit Playing Hockey” as well. That sounds like a good one. Thanks for the recommendation!
I really liked the blurb and the excerpt!! Thank you for the chance to win!!
This sounds like an awesome story. Love your Hat Trick series!
Thank you for this post and thank you for the giveaway, This series sounds really cool:)))))))))))))
The book sounds great. I love hockey players! Thanks for the excerpt and giveaway.
I always root for hockey love to win out over hockey hate, so I’m all over this one! Can’t wait!
This sounds great. I’m absolutely not a hockey fan, I’ve only been to one Stars games and that’s because the tickets were free, but the blurb, and the cover, are very nice. 🙂
I grew up in a family of Bruins fans and I adore the Hat Tricks series. I can’t wait to read Rivals!!
Great post & giveaway!
Looks and sounds great. I love stories with sport themes too =)
Great to see so many hockey fans…and fans of hockey in books… here!
For those of you who’ve read in the “Hat Trick” series, very awesome to hear from you! A new short story will be out in that series on January 11. “Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp” will have a blog tour of its own and I’m scheduled to be here talking about that one on January 28.
love the cover, sounds really interesting
please count me in
I can’t wait to read this! Big fan of hockey! Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!
I have a soft spot for reunited and second chances stories. Rivals sounds awesome!
Big hockey fan! Jeff who’s your favorite team? I’m a Rangers fan, even though I move into Devil’s territory years ago.
I’m a Red Wings fan. I grew up in Flint and have never wavered on my Red Wings support over the years. Also a Penguins fan, since back in the days of Lemieux. During my NYC years I went to Rangers games, but could never fully embrace them, although I do love watching Lundqvist play. He’s amazing.
Thank you for another book with hockey involved in it! Rivals sounds great!
Great post! Sounds like an awesome book!
congrats Liza!
