Welcome Kayla!
Book Name: A Spartan Love
Author Name: Kayla Jameth
Kayla Jameth grew up on the family farm in Ohio, baling hay, raising cattle, and making maple syrup. An unrepentant tomboy, her father taught her to weld before she graduated from high school.
She attended Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University and later, Texas A&M University in her pursuit of veterinary medicine, taking her farther away from her rural roots. You can transplant the county girl, but you can’t make her a city slicker. Besides, it was only going to be for a little while, right?
But it wasn’t all hard work for Kayla, her sojourn as the princess of the Celestial Kingdom left her with the title sir and a costume closet the envy of many knights, lords, and ladies. See? She does have some ladylike qualities complete with the title of Lady to back it up.
After declaring for years that she was just a veterinarian who wrote not an author, Kayla now finds herself living in Spring, Texas (practically Houston) and writing m/m erotic romance. The location is probably a bigger surprise than the genre. Never the kind of girl to discuss makeup and clothing designers, she would rather be outside getting dirty with the boys.
Kayla shares her home with a cat, two guinea pigs, a gerbil, three guppies, a husband and a son and daughter.

Alone, Andreas toils on a remote farmstead for a Spartan overlord. When a kryptes enters his world, Andreas fears for his life. The dread warriors stalk and kill helots—like Andreas’ father—as part of their training.
Andreas sees only one way to save himself: he must tame the fearsome warrior.
But what began as self-preservation develops into attraction. Yearning for the company of someone other than his ferret Ictis, Andreas decides to trust the Spartan warrior and risk the fate that claimed his father.
Born to rule by the sword, Theron sees the world as his and acts accordingly, taking everything Andreas offers and reaching for more. However, love between men in Sparta is considered shameful and requires either exile or suicide to redeem Sparta’s honor. Now, only the gods can save them from the terrible price Sparta extracts from men who desire other men.

What was your inspiration for A Spartan Love?
I was brainstorming additional story lines for my Apollo’s Men series and thought what would be the most unlikely combination for a story set in ancient Greece.
I minored in Classical History and I remembered the professor talking about the many ways Sparta differed from the rest of the Greek world.
They had a class of slaves called helots. Slaves in the ancient world were chattel—possessions instead of people. The Spartan helots weren’t chattel. They could not be bought or sold. They were more like mediaeval serfs. However, they vastly outnumbered their Spartan masters.
So every year, the Spartans declared war on them. Once again, not as the rest of the world would have done it. Instead, they sent the best of the young warriors called kryptes out into the countryside to spy on the helots and kill any that they thought were too strong, too popular or outside after dark. In other words, the ones they felt were most likely to lead a slave revolt.
So what do you suppose would happen if a helot set out to save his life by taming a kryptes?
Do you find it easy or difficult to write historical novels? Why?
Most of the time I find it rather easy due to my minor in Classical History so I have a base on which to draw. The difficult part is portraying the ancient mindsets in such a fashion that modern readers have a chance to understand them and the world that created them.
And cussing. I can’t really use a lot of modern concepts and don’t want to use the same old tired “By Zeus!” all the time. The funny thing is that in reality I could have my characters saying “fuck” and “shit” and other rather crude things, but then people get up in arms about modern cursing. There is nothing new under the sun. We didn’t invent those words. They have been around and in use for centuries. The Greeks used Greek words that meant the same thing.
What is your least favorite part about the writing process?
When I get my MS back and I’ve dealt with all the easy stuff and am down to addressing the major points.
If you could travel to another time, where and when would you go?
The ancient world without a doubt. I would love to see the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World while they were all still standing. And the Parthenon and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi and Petra and the Forbidden City and…
When was the last time you were in a library? Did you check out a book?
I think it’s been a couple of years. And I checked out, or rather my son checked out, a lot of research material for a school project.
I have a Kindle so I mostly read eBooks. I do spend a lot of time at Half Priced Book Store.
Are you working on another book now? Can you tell us about it?
Yes, I am.
A Spartan Love is the first book in a trilogy. The subsequent books, A Tested Love and A Shared Love, are both to the second draft stage.
I wish I could give you more, but that would be a major spoiler for A Spartan Love.
After he covered the dish, he left Ictis to guard the food while he took the vegetables to the nearby spring. Sweet grasses grew up around the stone basin and the encircling wall his father had built to keep the goats away. Andreas shuddered to think what the animals would do to the clear spring water if unchecked.
Removing the roots and tops from the leeks, he split them lengthwise and rinsed off the rich soil clinging to the leeks and turnip skins. Once his double-handled jug was full he lugged everything back to the hut.
Andreas tried not to think about other uses for the water, like wiping the sweat from the warrior’s hard body after training, the firm planes of his abdomen warm under Andreas’ hands. Was he still smooth or furred like Andreas? Did a line of dark hair wend its way down to where his manhood rested in a nest of sable curls? Andreas stumbled and nearly dropped the clay vessel, only catching himself in time to prevent disaster. What was wrong with him, dreaming about the warrior instead of watching where his feet went?
Resolutely he returned to the task at hand. “Cooking… I need to concentrate on the meal. If I keep up like this, I’ll lop my entire hand off!”
Shaking free the last drops of water from the leeks, Andreas added them to the juniper berries. The turnips were diced and placed around the rabbits. When they were done, he would drizzle oil over them. Stroking the smooth walls of the earthenware dish, another vision captured his thoughts. The oil would make the warrior’s skin glow in the lamplight, slick and firm under his fingers.
