TITLE: The Chase and the Catch
AUTHOR: A.F. Henley
PUBLISHER: Less Than Three Press
LENGTH: 192 pages
BLURB:
After one of his fans committed suicide, John lost everything: lover, confidence, drive. When he is given a chance to get back on his feet, he is happy to take it—even if it’s just writing an actor’s biography. It might not be romance, or even fiction, but it’s something, and there are worse people to work for than the charming, successful Parker Chase.
That doesn’t mean working for Parker is easy, however. A staunch supporter of living for the moment, Parker goes against everything John believes in. He feels out of place in every moment of Parker’s Hollywood life, stuck in a game of wits that at times seems almost contrived…
REVIEW:
Once in awhile, you come across a story that is perfection. The author may be unknown to you, and may not have other stories that appeal to your tastes, but they have that one. And that one just shines!! This is exactly how I feel about this book. I have no idea how I’m going to condense every wonderful emotion that I feel into a review that most likely will not do it justice. I’m going to try to get it out.
John is a writer. What he’s known for is his romance. He lives what he writes. He believes in Happy Ever After. He writes about it and wants it for himself. His books are so popular that he gets a following and with most fandom’s come stalkers. John is hounded by a fan named Logan who thinks they are soul mates. On the way to one of John’s signing’s Logan throws himself off of the bridge John happens to be traveling on. It’s devastating for John knowing Logan committed suicide. It creates so much stress that his partner is no longer able to deal with it and leaves.
Alone and dealing with potential career ending writers block he takes a job writing the biography of a very famous actor. Parker Chase is the epitome of rich, famous, spoiled egotistical ass. You want to hate him and you do for a bit. The difference with Parker is that almost from the start you can see and feel his heart. It’s so incredibly big and it’s apparent even though he tries his hardest to conceal it. There are so many incidence that you can see he’s trying his hardest not to feel anything for John but he still does. And the biggest mystery of the book is trying to find out why he doesn’t want it. Why he doesn’t want love and happy ever after and why he’s using John as some sort of ploy. There’s a scene towards the end that normally you’d see the main character agreeing with, “just to save face” but not Parker. He knows what he feels. He knows it’s different, special, and unique. He’s just not ready to admit that yet.
John fights his attraction to his new employer, Parker Chase. He fights it so damn well. There are times that they get so close. And it is so unbelievably hot and right and amazing and you want it to happen but in the back of your mind you think, “not yet, John. Don’t give in.” This author is so good at making you want it, you want them together and to touch, but you know…it’s not time.
Which ties in with whom arguably may be the most enthralling character in the book, William Anson. William is Parker’s 80ish year old butler, friend, confidante, father like figure that has been with his family since Parker was a child. So he is constantly battling with his loyalty issues. His concern for always protecting Parker and his need to save John who he can see is just a downright good person. The relationship that builds between William and John is snarky, fun, and sprinkled with tons of heart.
Without giving too much away, what ensue are the repercussions that are played between wealthy men that have too much time and money on their hands.
I will say knowing what I felt I knew from John I didn’t think there would be another chance. I loved how it ended. The concept of starting over and second chances seemed so perfect for these two and their story.
I want a sequel, however, for obvious reasons. And I have to know what became of William.
There is no denying that if it were possible this book would get way more than 5 stars from me. It was that good!
