The last couple of books I’ve released have had a common theme among reviews—This is different from what Peterson normally writes. I do believe the next few will have the same reaction. There is a good reason for this. You see, I have this HUGE folder titled “Need To Be Told” Each time a story idea hits me I leave a quick note in there, many may never be told, but a few demand my attention. While I believe my true calling is more contemporary romance with an edge, sometimes I find the need to step outside my comfort zone. This past year has been all about new discoveries, trying new things, and maybe I was looking for my niche. Funny thing is, I already knew where I belonged, but it took me trying new things to realize it.
Splintered was way outside my norm. I have always loved true crime and the story of Hutch and his team had been sitting in my “Need To Be Told” folder for about two years. One day Hutch started screaming and wouldn’t shut up. While I loved writing this book, I realize mystery/thriller isn’t for me. While there will be a sequel to Splintered as the budding romance between Hutch & Noah needs a chance to blossom, I think it will be the final book written by me in this sub-genre.
I have two books coming out in December one on the 1st – A Night Never Forgotten and on December 29th – Rival Within. Once again, both of these books are outside my “norm”
A Night Never Forgotten is a short Christmas story. It’s very sweet, no edge at all and no explicit sex, but it finally made it out of that HUGE folder.
Rival Within is sort of, kind of, a historical if you can imagine 1952 being historical. It was inspired by a video I watched. An actual video made by a police agency and shown in public schools titled “Boys Beware” It was basically a public service announcement on how to protect young boys and men from those scary homosexuals. The idea of what it must have done to that young gay male sitting in class broke my heart. Rival Within is a hard story to read at times. Tom is a police officer, father, husband and devoutly religious. Tom is also gay, but until Ben, he never admits it, even to himself. The admission brings with it some very hard and painful choices.
Another thing you’ll see from me early in 2015 before I return you to your regularly scheduled programming “aka” my normal writing, is a paranormal a few of you may have heard of; Innocence to the Max. I wrote this a couple years ago as a free read with the MM Romance Group on Goodreads. I always planned on finishing the story, but life and other stories got in the way. Max and Cisco finally screamed loud enough to be heard and I listened.
So, thanks for stopping by and listening to my crazy ramblings. Also, thanks to Dani for giving me a place to do it. ~Hugs~ Jo
Hi Jo! I think you did a great job with Splintered and I’m glad Hutch and Noah will be getting one more story. Looking forward to your December releases and Max and Cisco’s story too. I never forgot about them. 🙂 You are one of my favorite authors and I love your series, but I’m very glad you have that “Need To Be Told” folder. Keep trying new things and surprising us. 🙂
Aww thanks Lisa. I guess one thing can be said for me… I’m never boring LOL Who knows what will come out of that folder next year 🙂
~hugs~

Jo –
It would be something to try and shoehorn these stories into different sub-genre just to ‘stay’ within a label. I have to believe most readers read more than just one type of book – I know I like fantasy, Sci-fi, Contemporary, historicals and others. So I like when my favorite authors apply their talent to a new flavor. 🙂

Thanks Andrew. I’m the same way, I like reading in lots of different genres and I have really enjoyed writing them. Who knows when I’ll get on one of these kicks again but I have lots and lots of contemporary romance ideas in that HUGE folder so I think a lot of them will be making it to the top soon 🙂
