BLURB:
Sean Vargos is quiet, well respected, and dedicated to his job. But Dave Simpson sees Sean as more than a coworker. He’s fought his attraction to Sean for months but can’t get him out of his thoughts.
They tentatively embark on a relationship, but Sean isn’t all that he seems. He struggles to put his past behind him and overcome his fears.
Dave, with his good looks and open nature, accepts that sometimes Sean’s doubts get the better of him and he runs. Dave just wants the chance to show Sean he can be trusted and the past doesn’t have to dictate their future.
REVIEW:
I love the idea of office romances. I like how people who work together and are actually “together” try to be professional in a business setting. I like the build-up of desire that co-workers hide in a professional setting. I like how it ignites when they get home or someplace private. The build-up is decadent, and I love it.
Unfortunately, none of that happens in this book.
I missed the passion, the connection that these two were suppose to make. Granted this is a very short story and maybe given several more chapters that could have been built but these 78 pages lacked a lot for me. I had to physically force myself to pick this book back up so that I could finish reading it. I had to repeatedly remind myself that it’s a short story and it will end soon. With the good shorts, I don’t ever have to do that. Usually with the good shorts I never want them to end.
Of the two characters, I think I liked Dave the most. Sean was just a blah character. I think it was imperative to show a pattern of issues with Gareth. The one specific issue that happened and resulted in the horrific crash seemed benign. I think that’s probably a major issue with short stories not being able to fully delve into each character and each situation.
I think it’s important to point out that there wasn’t anything downright atrocious with this book. The writing was really good. I think given more pages this story might have had the opportunity to develop beautifully. I also want to point out that I will continue to seek out books by this author because I do feel there is potential for a great story. This specific book, however, just wasn’t for me.
