REVIEW:
This is a sweet little nugget of a story, only about twenty-five pages long, but packed with a world of loving.
Christopher and Jack are in their early twenties and have already seen and suffered from the horrors of war. Members of the same military unit, they became fast friends, and when Christopher suffered a serious injury that cost him his arm and almost his life, Jack was always there by his side.
Now, safely back at Christopher’s family estate they have managed to stay together. Jack, without fortune or prospects, now acts as Christopher’s personal valet. It seems the perfect solution, but while there is heady passion, there is also a sense of melancholy as the lovers must be ever careful not to give away their feelings to family and friends. They have to make do with stolen moments behind locked doors. It’s the early nineteenth century, after all, and their affair would be considered scandalous and illegal.
So it’s a tenuous dance for these two who only want to be with each other. I especially love the salon scene where Jack, a gifted dancer, is forced to demonstrate the waltz, with Christopher as his partner, teaching the dance to a younger sibling. Their longing and nervous anxiety is palpable. This scene says it all.
A fortuitous event helps to ensure that Christopher and Jack will have their HEA and we are happy for them too. They have finally found their time for loving. The author delivers a sweet, but not overly sentimental, little Regency romance all wrapped up very nicely. Recommended.
