Ellis Broad never imagined he would end up a single father before he turned twenty-nine. Then again, most of his expectations for the future evaporated when his husband of three years filed for divorce, leaving Ellis as their six-month-old son Harrison’s only parent. After the divorce Ellis hides, working from home on his small graphic design business so he can be a full-time dad. He succeeds until Zane Hadlin stumbles into his life. Zane is everything Ellis desires and everything he fears at the same time. A former gang member from the wrong side of the tracks, Zane turned his life around after his older brother was killed in a shooting. Now an artist, Zane shows Ellis a path back into the world and all he’s been missing out on. The only problem is, Ellis’s ex-husband hasn’t quite gone for good, and his digging into Zane’s past could drag up secrets no one is prepared to deal with.
Review:
Anna Martin has a very unique voice as a writer and while I’m more familiar with her BDSM series, I was intrigued with how she would handle a different kind of story and I wasn’t disappointed.
Ellis Broad finds himself a single dad to a sweet baby boy. It was his dream and he thought it was his husbands too, but apparently the man had other ideas. So Ellis spends his time working from home so that he can be the one to take care of Harrison. He’s pretty much given up on having more than a one-night-stand because he’s sure there isn’t a lot of men who are interested in being an instant father.
Until he meets Zane.
Zane is almost the complete opposite of Ellis. He’s artistic, loves kids and easy-going and he catches Ellis’s eye immediately when they are introduced by friends. Zane isn’t who Ellis envisioned himself with, but after getting to know him, it turns out that Zane might just be perfect for him.
Of course, the road to true love never runs smooth and both their pasts come back to haunt them. The side characters in this story are kind of a mixed bag and had hard time warming up to any of them except for Ellis’s brother Leo. His friends are all kind of…abrupt, although they do stick up for him when he needs their support the most. His mom’s attitude kind of pissed me off for the most part.
I love how the author uses descriptions to paint us a picture of the environment around Ellis and Zane. I could picture Zane’s bright and cheery apartment and the center he works at in my head. I love how Ellis suffers from the same insecurities that all new parents face and it made me glad when it was obvious that Zane was going to be someone who would be able to help him raise Harrison.
Ellis’s ex, Oliver, is one of those love-to-hate characters. He’s cruel and manipulative and from the first time he’s introduced I want to hit him over the head with a frying pan. His whole…I don’t want you but I don’t want anyone else to have you either…attitude grates on my last nerve.
Ellis and Zane, however, soothed my nerves and had me cheering for them, even when Ellis sometimes acted like an idiot.
Anna Martin knows how to draw readers in and keep them interested with smart writing, engaging characters and strong storylines. In fact, the only complaint I can make is one that is a personal prejudice of mine. I think that a father as dedicated as Ellis should have always insisted on safe sex until he and his partner could be tested, no matter how wonderful that partner seemed to be. He is so adamant about every other safety net for his child, it just jarred me a little.
Other than that, though, this was the perfect story and I highly recommend it if you like something sweet, compelling and not really high in angst.
