ou never know what you’ll find in south Texas—or what will find you.
Trent Jacek doesn’t want too much—to live on the ranch his brother owns, a few puppies to keep him company in his trailer, maybe a good man if he can find one. First he has to catch a break long enough to try. Things just aren’t slowing down on the Jacek ranch. They’ve got a barn to rebuild, and their plan to get a pack of shifter wolves off their back doesn’t seem to be working.
Then there’s the matter of the bones the police are looking for on the ranch. After a greyed, old femur was left on the porch, Trent and his brother Joe are forced to confront some things they’d never expected to. Is that solitary bone from their mother, who went missing over twenty years ago? If so, how did she end up there? If not, who is dumping people on the ranch?
Trent’s been having the strangest dreams since he’s seen that femur but can’t imagine they’re more than just dreams. He doesn’t have a lot of time to worry about them between shifter attacks, a nosy biologist and neighbours coming by to snoop.
What Trent doesn’t know is someone has put an assassin on his tail, but it’s the assassin who will come to question everything he’s been told once he meets the vibrant, sexy man he’s been sent to kill.
Publisher’s Note: This book is the sequel to Dark Nights and Headlights by Bailey Bradford.
REVIEW:
I read the first book in this little series and I have to say that I really wanted to see what happened to Trent and who his forever man would be.
Trent Jacek is the younger brother of Joe Jacek whom we met in Dark Nights and Headlights. Trent is the badass little guy who has a slight chip on his shoulder regarding being shorter than most men. He’s about 5’7 and just about the funniest, sarcastic guy you’ll meet. Trent is the kind of guy that you want to be your friend because you know that he’ll have your back. Trent is sarcastic, but truly not in a mean way. It’s the way that he shows that he likes and/or cares about you. If he ignored you…then you know that you’re not high on his list of people. Trent is such a loyal and loving guy. He’s got this great heart and as he works with his brother and Diego, you know that his heart is just full to bursting. Trent wants someone who loves him and that he loves. He sees the relationship that Joe and Diego have and he wants the same thing.
Mahon Morrison is this bear shifter who is sent to kill Trent and take Diego back to his old pack. Mahon has been living on his own and doing the protecting the shifter thing his entire life. He was chosen as a cub to do this work and it’s all he’s ever known. He relies completely on himself and pretty ok with his life. He sleeps with men when the mood occurs, otherwise, he’s on assignment, doing his thing. Mahon is this really sweet guy, even though he is a bear shifter who shares his name with his littermates. Mahon has this wonderful sense of honor and loyalty. Mahon has such integrity. I loved watching him grow and spread his wings. He’s a really good guy and I’m really glad that it was shown in this book
I really enjoyed seeing Joe and Diego again in this installment. I liked seeing how Diego is getting to be so much stronger in the sense that he’s out there fighting and not allowing others to run in front of him and protect him. I loved watching his growth not only in DN&HL, but in this book as well. Joe was still Joe, yet, he’s grown also as a person. He’s got this guy in his life, beyond his brother whom he loves and will do anything to protect. It was great to see the evolution in both characters. You see more of the sheriff in this book as she’s around for the bones that were found. There is this character Bill, who kept coming by. He’s an annoying character, however, he’s just this side character who barely deserves mention. He’s kinda a jerk and that’s the best that I can say about him.
There was so really good intimate scenes between Trent and Mahon. I loved that these two found that not only could they have really good sex together, but that they also found intimacy that they’ve never had before. Their scenes together were really hot and intimate. Good times.
The mystery/suspense of if the bones found were indeed their mother. If so, who killed her? Diego’s old pack still coming after them and putting the hit on Trent. I liked that there was a fair amount of action in this story and that was really well done. I liked seeing these guys come together to protect each other. It was sweet and showed that no matter what or who you are…that you can all come together.
This book was actually a pretty good story. I really enjoyed watching Trent and Mahon’s relationship grow. These two men who were loners and they found the person that they could love and be loved in return. I loved how strong Trent was. I loved how he was such a rock for those he cares about. That even doing something so against his beliefs, was just hard to bear for him. I loved how Trent has this thing about killing bugs, spiders, etc. It really bothered him and I liked how he was consistent throughout the entire book.
