BLURB:
Every day has been a struggle for Brynn Davidson since his mother’s death. He dropped out of college to care for his sisters, but his father’s grief and rage-filled abuse is taking its toll. While he wishes for a better life, Brynn sees no way out, since he can’t leave his sisters behind. What little hope he finds comes from his best friend, Leila, who repeatedly offers to report his father, but is his rock. Then she surprises him with news that her brother is back in town. Brynn’s former crush, Adric, left town cursing Brynn’s name. Now, he offers to support Brynn in any decision that will get Brynn out of his horrible situation. But Brynn doesn’t know if he’s ready for his best friend’s brother.
REVIEW:
Brynn is twenty-four and still living at home, but not because he has no other choice. He’s being abused by his father––who can’t cope with his mother’s death–– and is afraid that if he leaves, his dad will do the same to his two younger sisters.
His best friend Leila has been trying to get him out for years, but knows she can’t change anything if Brynn won’t cooperate. Then one day she has agreed to meet her older brother for coffee when Brynn is there too, not knowing Brynn has always had a crush on Adric. But Brynn also holds a grudge towards Adric.
When Adric found out Brynn was gay, they were both still in high school. Adric started acting like an asshole, hurting Brynn deeply. But now everything is different, though Brynn hasn’t gotten that message yet.
Adric is flirting with Brynn, but also tries to convince him to report his dad to the police. He’s trying to take care of Brynn, show him he’s changed. But Brynn isn’t convinced easily.
I liked the story line of this novella, I’m just very disappointed that it all felt so rushed. It all went too fast from not wanting to report his father, to yes, I’ll sue for custody I’ll come live with you.
The characters were wonderful, the kids, Leila and both MC’s. Yet it didn’t give me the wow factor. It could’ve been so much more. The idea of the story is so great, the feeling of the story is amazing, but the result rushed and unfinished.
Not bad, but not great is all I can say. It would be good for a reader that doesn’t like long in depth stories.
