Upon taking the throne as High Lord of Katraman and Liege of Scura, Lornyc Reagalos’s focus on rebuilding one city and reassuring another leaves little time for his husband, Methian.
Added to that, he must contend with is the unexpected revelation that his grandfather, Romanus, set up his own religion and named an enigmatic figure called The One as its deity.
Through some twisted interpretation of the signs left by Romanus, the Cerulean Cult comes to believe Lornyc is their god and invites him to sanctify the Cult as part of its five-hundred-year anniversary.
During the Sanctification Ceremony, the Cult’s holy relic, an orb given to it by Romanus, is split, releasing an entity that tears a hole in the dimensions.
The species that guards the dimensions, the Valen, force Lornyc to fix the breach, or they will have him extinguished.
Lornyc turned to greet Lord Moulshom as he entered—but it wasn’t who he expected. The four years away from Katraman had been good to Davvis, his skin bronzed and his hair bleached blond by the sun. Tall and broad—no one could say Lornyc didn’t have a type, and Davvis and Methian exemplified it.
Lornyc stood up and held out his hand. “Davvis, I thought you were your father.”
Davvis grabbed his hand and pulled him into a one-armed hug. “Lornyc, you look amazing.”
“You too, Davvis.” Lornyc heard Methian get to his feet, and he stepped out of Davvis’s embrace. “Let me introduce you to Methian.”
“Lornyc’s husband,” added Methian.
Davvis offered his hand, and the two men shook hands somewhat briefly, with matching tight smiles. “The former Lord Hadral, I presume.”
Drellar arrived with a drinks tray, and Lornyc silently thanked his Head of Staff’s impeccable timing.
“Please, Davvis, sit down. We have plenty to catch up on.”
“I hope I am not intruding.” Davvis’s eyes flicked to Methian before he sat down. “My father said he’d spoken to you about my return. I was keen to help as much as possible—he’s not as young as he once was. He did fill me in on some of the more unpleasant things that have been happening.”
Methian grunted at that, and Lornyc tried to ignore him. “Let’s say for now there have been many changes recently.”
“Not all of them unpleasant,” said Methian, resting his arm around Lornyc’s shoulders. “It’s such a pity you weren’t in Katraman for our marriage.”
Davvis’s eyes narrowed. “Talis kept me informed of all the important comings and goings—if he’d mentioned that, I’d have been back, I’m sure.”
After everything that had happened today, the last thing Lornyc needed was the posturing between Davvis and Methian.
“I understand you wish to take up some of your father’s duties, and in theory I have no qualms about that, but considering recent events, it must be handled carefully.”
“You have my loyalty and my devotion, Lornyc. And, of course, my friendship.”
Lornyc sensed Methian stiffen next to him. “I’m sure we’re all very touched to hear that,” Methian drawled.
Lornyc elbowed him sharply in the ribs, and Methian did a good job of hiding the pain, but he did remove his arm.
“You must excuse us, Davvis. It’s been a particularly trying day.” Lornyc scowled at Methian, who looked unrepentant. “Perhaps we could discuss this further tomorrow?”
“Not to worry, Lornyc. I’ll have Drellar make me an appointment so we can talk further.”
Davvis left, and Lornyc rounded on Methian. “You unmitigated ass!”
“What have I done?”
“You know exactly what you’ve done. You sat there and glared daggers at the man for no reason, and tried to claim me like your property! You acted like a sulky teenager.”
“I did no such thing!”
Lornyc ground his teeth. Methian’s behavior was ridiculous and insulting. “You need to get your unfounded jealousy in check, Methian. Before I really lose my temper.”
