Review:
I love a good paranormal story and after reading the blurb, I was happy to pick this up and get started but it didn’t quite live up to its hype.
This book almost felt like the reader was being dropped into the middle of a story in progress. I felt like we were missing something by not knowing the story behind Ross Stone’s business partner Jack Knight and his boyfriend Hal. It might be something for the author to explore in the future.
Ross is a man with a past. He was the victim of horrible domestic abuse so when Evan comes to his office beaten to holy hell, Ross can’t help but be sympathetic.
I get that people connect quickly under pressure but this was just too quick for me. I would have liked to have seen Ross fight it a little longer, if for nothing else than professional reasons.
I did like the idea of Evan’s past coming back to haunt him…literally. By the time the whole mess is straightened out, the reader ends up feeling as sorry for the ghost as they do for Evan.
I loved the dedication of Jack and Hal to Ross. We could all use some friends like that, someone to stick by us through thick and thin.
Ross’s evil ex is almost too campy to be taken seriously. You can almost picture him twirling his mustache as he gives an evil laugh. He’s a real piece of work though and I can’t say I was sorry about his fate, or surprised about the “twist” at the end involving him.
The writing is smart but it could have used a bit more editing. There were several places where things were a little garbled and could have used some clarification.
My biggest issue with this book is that it should have been longer. Giving a little more time for tension to build and not wrapping everything up so neatly…and quickly…would have made this a much more enjoyable book.
And the ending…well, I don’t mind a cliff-hanger, but only with some kind of clear indication that the next book is coming. Nothing bothers me more in a book than not getting closure.
All in all, the story is mostly good and while the plot doesn’t quite live up to the premise, if you’re looking for a quick read with a few spine-tingling moments that will have you looking over your shoulder, you will probably like this book.
