Lowell Cartwright’s life as a mercenary problem solver has taken its toll, and after one more difficult job, he wants out. For help, he turns to Bull, a soldier of fortune turned club owner—not exactly a friend, but the best chance Lowell has. He visits Bull’s club to scope it out and meets Jeremy Hodgson. The twink captures his attention in a big way. Bull tells Lowell to stay away from the club until he decides whether he can help, so Lowell stays in town. When he spots Jeremy passed out on the floor of a convenience store, he goes to Jeremy’s aid.
Lowell piques Jeremy’s interest immediately, pushing all the right buttons. Then, when Jeremy needs help, Lowell’s kindness turns interest into something more.
But trouble comes knocking when Jeremy’s place is bugged. Maybe Lowell’s past is catching up to him, or maybe the danger centers on Jeremy’s roommate Tristan’s mysterious boyfriend. Whatever the source of the problem, the future Lowell and Jeremy hope for doesn’t stand a chance unless they can find a way to protect themselves.
Review:
I loved the first book in this series by Andrew Grey so when the second became available to review, I jumped at the chance. Mr. Grey is a steady writer and you can count something new from him every couple of months and it’s rarely a disappointment.
Lowell we know from the first book as “Spook”, the mercenary who tried to “persuade” Bull to come back to the life, earning himself the wrath of Zach, Bull’s boyfriend. Lowell has finally decided that the time has come for him to retire but he knows it’s not going to be easy. He turns to Bull for help and meets Jeremy at the same time.
Jeremy is a sweet man with a big heart and he immediately sees something in Lowell that convinces him to give the big man a chance. They go back and forth, Lowell trying to keep Jeremy safe and Jeremy trying to convince Lowell that he’s old enough and man enough to make his own decisions.
I adore all the characters in this book. It was nice to see Zach and Bull again, and I enjoyed getting to know Tristan and Kevin some more and I’m hoping we will be seeing their stories in future books. I think all good characters deserve their happy ending.
The interactions between Lowell and Bull and Zach were fun to read and well written. A bit of humor is something I’ve come to expect from this author as is the extremely hot sex and ramped up romance. I flew through the book in a couple hours and enjoyed the ride to the end.
That being said, I do have one complaint…or maybe it’s just an observation.
I loved the story and was engaged by it, but it kept flitting through my mind that Lowell and Jeremy’s story was a lot like Bull and Zach’s…almost too much alike. I kept feeling like I knew exactly what was coming because I had read it somewhere before.
I know the story is part of a series, but I think that each couple that we meet should be a little more different than the others. For me this was almost like a copy-cat story and I would have liked to have seen a little more variety in the way the author approached the trials that the characters were going through.
Andrew Grey is a prolific writer who seems to have an endless supply of story ideas floating around in his head. He’s tackled almost every story genre I can think of, from cowboys and satyrs to gym fanatics and chefs, and done them all extremely well. There isn’t one story or series I can think of that I wouldn’t recommend.
But in the end, I have to be honest in my review, it’s what I get paid for (well, I don’t, but I treat my reviews like I’m getting paid to do them).
