TITLE: Ya Like That?
AUTHOR: Iyana Jenna
PUBLISHER: JMS Books
LENGTH: 44 Pages
BLURB:
Evan Foster is left with nothing after his father screwed up their family company. Evan’s father ended up in jail, his mother in a mental institution, and they lost all their possession to the bank. Evan dropped out of college and he still has to pay for his mother’s treatment. He has a job at a diner but it isn’t nearly enough.
Brian Donaghue is a millionaire with a multinational company but isn’t lucky in love. When he sees the picture Evan sends in with a resume, he’s immediately interested. But the way ropes Evan into his company is far from conventional. Brian makes Evan an offer he can’t refuse.
Or can he?
REVIEW:
I loved the blurb for this story. I loved the cover. I loved the title. From there, however, it all went downhill.
Evan is a twenty two year old who suddenly finds himself, for all intents and purposes, alone in the world and in a dire financial situation. Just when he’s getting truly desperate he receives a phone call about a rather mysterious sounding job that offers a ridiculous sum of money. From the outset he’s slightly concerned about how legal or even moral this job may be considering the phone interview requires him to detail his physical attributes and asks whether he’s gay. But because he feels he doesn’t have any other option he takes the job, rationalizing that he can always quit if something dodgy is going on.
And although dear Evan is a little slow on the uptake it is rather obvious that something extremely dodgy is going on. Before Evan knows it he finds himself at an unknown residence, bound, blindfolded and at the sexual disposal of a Dom he has never laid eyes on.
Oh my god, how great could this story have been. If the author ever decides to rewrite and expand I will be first in line to read it. I love the concept here, and the writing itself is actually well done but everything is just way too rushed and lacks any depth. Both main characters have interesting backstories that are mentioned but not explored, Brian in particular I just felt I didn’t understand in the slightest. Evan, well honestly I’ve read some TSTL characters before but Evan truly is right up there with the best of them. He goes from not wanting to do anything dubious to being willingly rendered helpless in a stranger’s home because according to Evan he is left with no choice but to sell himself. All within 24 hours. At one point he begins sobbing because he feels confused and Brian explains to him that Evan’s really too young to be living by himself. Did I mention the man is 22 years old!?
I felt that the BDSM element was either unnecessary or needed to be expanded upon but then again I would say the same thing about every element of this story. Scenes skipped by in such rapid succession that at times it felt like more of a plot outline than an actual completed story.
And my love of the title only lasted until the first time Brian says – Ya like that bitch? Yeah… cringe.
