It should have been a perfect night out. Instead, Mark and Donald collide with tragedy when they leave their favorite night spot. That dark October night, three gay-bashers emerge from the gloom, armed with slurs, fists, and an aluminum baseball bat.
The hate crime leaves Donald lost and alone, clinging to the memory of the only man he ever loved. He is haunted, both literally and figuratively, by Mark and what might have been. Trapped in a limbo offering no closure, Donald can’t immediately accept the salvation his new neighbor, Walter, offers. Walter’s kindness and patience are qualities his sixteen-year-old nephew, Justin, understands well. Walter provides the only sense of family the boy’s ever known. But Justin holds a dark secret that threatens to tear Donald and Walter apart before their love even has a chance to blossom.

Why There’s a New Edition of Bashed
© Rick R. Reed, 2014, all rights reserved
Some people have asked me why there’s a new edition of Bashed. They say, “I mean, come on, the old edition was still out there in both ebook and paperback. Why re-release it?”
It’s a valid question.
I think the reason, especially for Bashed, is the hope that by re-issuing the book, it will find new readers. The original version was published five years ago. Five years ago, hate crimes against LGBT people still existed.
They still exist today. The book revolves around an atrocity that happens all too frequently for the gay community (Google some statistics and you’ll be appalled). Fortunately, Bashed is also filled with hope and ultimately details a journey back toward life and love.
More than anything else, I hoped that readers who hadn’t discovered when it originally came out would find it in this new-and-improved version (this one has a new and great cover by Aaron Anderson, is completely re-edited, and includes an afterword that the old edition did not). And, in finding it, would not only take a gripping and emotional journey with the characters but also be reminded about the reality—and not the fiction—of hate crimes.
