Reader Q&A with JP
As part of the blog tour, I asked my friends and readers on Facebook to see what kinds of questions they had. They came up with a pot luck of subjects:
From Karin: I know that writing this story (A Heart for Robbie) was hard for you, on several levels. Did it help you to write it in any way?
To be honest, working on some of the blog post for this tour have been just as hard as writing the book was. Because the blog posts are actually about me. The book, I could pretend it was about someone else – about Julian and Robbie. But putting myself back in those shoes was hard.
I don’t know if it helped me. I feel weird talking about it because it’s not really something that I get into with people. People know, of course, because I post something on my page every year on her birthday, but I’ve talked more about her in the last few months than I have the last few years. Writing out all of my memories, going through the box I have from that time period, these weren’t as painful as they’d once been.
But, I’d already written about other aspects of my history, and as my friend Jack told me again and again – it was time.
From Marinieves: Hi … What will be the first, of your books, you recommend to someone who doesn’t know your work?
I think it depends on the kind of story you like. I have a variety of stories.
If you want something that’s sweeter and more tender, I’d start with the Little Boy Lost series. Brian and Jamie are just two kids in love in Alabama.
If you’re more interested in a heartbreaker, I’d start with Aaron from the Survivor Stories. It’s one of my very best books and will stay with you long after you close the book.
If you’re looking for something naughty, In the Absence of Monsters and Painting Fire on the Air are wonderful BDSM novels.
From Crissy: I know all I need to know to love my Trish…*nods*
That feeling is totally mutual. *nods back*
From fellow author Ethan Stone: Why do you hate spiders so much? They just want to live.
- Because they’re creepy.
- Because they have too many legs to be natural.
- Because they want to kill me in my sleep.
Now, I have no problem with them living. Just so long as it’s not with me, or on my Facebook page. Stop tagging me in spider pictures and I’ll stop smacking you every time I see you. #Deal
From Morgan: What are you working on now?
I just turned in Vinny, Porn Star to Wilde City Press (this is the third book in the Working Boys series).
I signed two new contracts with Wilde City to participate in the next two “Butt” anthologies. The first of which, Butt Babes in Boyland, will be out for the holidays.
I have three Works in Progress going right now. One is another book in the Aaron series about Aaron’s youngest brother, Anthony. The other two are completely new concepts – one a Sci-Fi type novel. I generally work on several projects at once so that if I get stuck on one, I can work on another. Usually, whatever project gets to 25,000-30,000 words first is what I focus on.
We’ll see who is talking the loudest.
From fellow author Andrew Gordon: When are you going to come to DC so we can go out on the town?
Well, you seem to have the same condition a lot of my friends seem to suffer from—“kids.” So, as I mentioned on Facebook, I need to be vaccinated first, and then I’d love to come and hang out with you guys. I miss you.
Excerpt from A Heart for Robbie
The bookstore didn’t seem to be doing a very hardy business, since it was a chilly Friday evening on the cusp of spring. So he wandered around the shelves, taking in some of the newer titles and reading the backs of books that interested him. He found a few things to put on his “to be read” list, and then a thought struck him.
“Excuse me,” he asked the woman at the counter, who sat affixing “Signed by the Author” stickers to the fronts of a stack of books.
She looked up with a smile, as if thrilled to be interrupted. Her flaxen hair fell in sheets around her pale face, and her eyes, magnified by large lenses, were a brilliant blue.
“Can I help you find something?” she asked, her voice as bright as her smile.
“Would you happen to have heard of an author named Julian Holmes?” he asked, digging the name out of the back of his mind as he remembered the conversation with Dane about the author whose son lay at St. Mary’s. Her visage, already animated, brightened still further.
“Oh, of course. Julian comes in all the time. He had a signing here a few weeks ago, in fact. His last while he’s getting ready for the birth of his son. He’s so excited.” She held up a small stack of books with the name Julian Holmes across the front and a “Signed by the Author” sticker. Simon took the first one off the stack and read the back.
In the far reaches of a small Arkansas town, an unspoken evil has taken hold. Monsters conjured by mere thought, demons summoned from Hell through the subconscious, and the dead rising from their graves. Liam Black’s parents had moved them to Tempest, Arkansas, to get away from the carnage of New York City streets. Now he faces the greatest danger ever, the beautiful Eve. While she may look sweet and innocent in their junior bio class, Liam suspects there’s far more to her than anyone sees. Is she the one responsible for their classmates’ newfound ability to transform thought into matter? Liam, armed with the ancient knowledge hidden in the attic of his new home, is the only one who can stop it.
Waiting for someone else’s child to die so yours can live is the worst kind of Hell.
Celebrated Young Adult author Julian Holmes pits the heroic characters in his Black Heart series against all different kinds of monsters. But when a critical heart defect threatens his son’s life, he finds he has no champion. No amount of books, classes, or practice can prepare Julian for the fight to save his beautiful son’s life
Suddenly there are hospitals, transplant lists, and the nightmare of insurance red tape to navigate. In the midst of his trouble, Julian meets Simon Phelps, the insurance coordinator for Robbie’s case. Simon lives so deep in the closet he might never find his way out, but he dreams of exactly what Julian has. Then one night, drunken need and desperation brings them together, and a new fight begins.

About the author:
Award winning romance novelist, J. P. Barnaby has penned over a dozen books including the Working Boys series, the Little Boy Lost series, In the Absence of Monsters, and Aaron. As a bisexual woman, J.P. is a proud member of the GLBT community both online and in her small town on the outskirts of Chicago. A member of Mensa, she is described as brilliant but troubled, sweet but introverted, and talented but deviant. She spends her days writing software and her nights writing erotica, which is, of course, far more interesting. The spare time that she carves out between her career and her novels is spent reading about the concept of love, which, like some of her characters, she has never quite figured out for herself.
