Good Morning,
Thank you for letting me be here today!
This post wasnt the stress blogging usually is for me. Yay, maybe I’m tackling my blogging fear.
I want your opinion. Yesterday I got an article on Amazon changing things up with their book purchases. They’re supposedly thinking of doing a monthly fee for unlimited books. I’m attaching the article: http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2014/report-amazon-testing-kindle-unlimited-subscription-ebook-service/
What are your thoughts on this? I’m not sure how I feel, but if this kind of thing brings people back to reading, then the volume alone could be good… I dont know. What are your thoughts?
Have a good day everyone! I’ll be back to check if anyone responses!
It kind of intrigues me. For someone like me, depending on the price, it could be to my advantage.
I think so from a reading standpoint. It worries me from an author POV. Bands say they make no money off records, they have to tour to make money. So the records sells are like advertisement to draw people to the tours. Authors have no way to make that up, if that makes any sense. But, I see this as the wave of the future. I don’t see the big publishers agreeing though…
As a reader, I think that sounds awesome. As an author, I’m worried about how that would work out in the long run.
Exactly what I just said above. It would take really creative ways to make money.
I don’t know. I’d feel obligated to “fulfill my quota” every month, so I’d probably get a lot of stuff I know I’d never read. I’m already too much of an ebook hoarder! And for authors, it would probably be a nightmare royalty-wise…
Okay, that’s a great point!
Hmmm. I suppose it was only a matter of time. I regularly download, so this might turn out to be more financially beneficial, but my concern is for the authors. Amazon already dictates pretty constraining rules and I doubt many authors make decent money from them as the system stands now.
I think the quality of books would possibly suffer. Authors who have supported themselves through their writing couldn’t on the level they were used too. At least that’s my assumption. I don’t know. Amazon rocks so much. They have single handily changed a broken industry. I wouldnt be here without them. That leads me to trust their decision making ability more than just my opinions… Maybe?
It would probably be like Netflix or Oyster or Scribd. Both Oyster and Scribd have earned me money. The volume on Amazon might go up with this or it may not affect the total sales. On Scribd, I’m paid the same amount I’d make on a sale at another site.
As a reader, I’m a little skeptical. Will they have the books I want to read or will I still be buying the same as before and just supplementing with borrowed books. Right now I have access to the Kindle lending library and I can only send borrowed books to my Kindle device not my tablet (there may be a way I just haven’t figured out). The unlimited downloads would be great but not if I can’t read on any device and not if there aren’t many books I want. Like others have commented, I have big concerns for authors. I am sure you all have huge concerns about royalties. I am not happy about paying $10 and up for ebooks from the big publishing houses but this new system won”t help that situation because it looks like none of the large publishing houses have opted into the system. Books from small publishing houses and independently published books are usually much more reasonably priced. I know many of the authors I read have day jobs to support themselves so they can come home at night and write. I would hate to see these authors (or any authors) have to take a pay cut.
How will the authors make a living if I’m not paying for each book? I don’t want the authors to stop writing!!!!! I’ve switched to buying a lot of my books directly from Dreamspinner.
I like to impulsively reread and I think I’ll stick with the old way. Authors deserve every penny of what they make and I’m happy to do my part. The last thing I want is to have my favorite authors feel like they have to churn out mass quantities to make a living.
I read and purchase a lot of books each month some well known authors and others just starting out…would be good for me but not for the people writing the books
For a reader, this would depend on the monthly price. My book buying varies from month to month.
I’d much rather buy the books I want. I actually don’t buy much from Amazon directly any more either because I like to “own” my ebooks so I buy the actually mobi files direct from the publishers and AllRomance as much as possible. I suppose I don’t really understand how the whole thing works and how it could possible benefit the authors – how they could make a living with that type of set-up. Plus some months I can read 10 books a week…sometimes I’m lucky to get through one. Who knows maybe it’ll be good, but I won’t be participating. 🙂
