Title: Equals
Cover Artist: Brigham Vaughn
Too busy to date while he worked to put himself through school, Russell Bishop’s dedication finally pays off; he has a great job with Vantage Marketing. Stephen Parker, CFO of the marketing firm, has resigned himself to a life without a partner. For six months, they wanted each other but it isn’t until Russ slips on spilled coffee, and Stephen rushes to his rescue that they discover their attraction is mutual. However, the twenty year age gap between them proves difficult when they begin dating. Fiercely independent, Russ isn’t sure he’s ready for long-term commitment. Scarred from a previous relationship, Stephen is afraid history is repeating itself. Is there any way for them to meet in the middle and become equals?
Stephen Parker watched in horror as the latte he’d been clutching between his forearm and his chest tipped forward. With a leather portfolio full of important documents and an iPad clutched in one hand and his phone in the other, there was little he could do to stop it. He swore as he jerked away, barely avoiding the coffee splashing on his navy blue suit, but his brown leather shoes were covered. The stairwell door slammed shut, and he swore again as he went to pick up the cardboard cup and almost lost his iPad. Carefully skirting the puddle, he retrieved the cup and headed out into the hall with an irritated sigh. It was before seven A.M. and the office was deserted. Only half the lights were on, and he knew the cleaning staff wasn’t in yet. He liked coming in early to work; it was the only way he got work done without interruption from someone needing something from him. His assistant, Elizabeth, could only do so much.
He tossed the cup in the nearest trash can, located the janitor’s closet, and unearthed a wet floor sign inexplicably hiding behind several boxes of cleaning supplies. After twenty years at Vantage Marketing, he knew the place like the back of his hand. Said hand was sticky from spilled coffee, but he wanted to put the sign out before some other health-minded idiot decided to take the stairs and tracked coffee through the halls. At forty-seven, he was all too aware of the threat of a gradual thickening around his waist. He stayed fit, but only because carbs were a thing of the past, and he took the stairs whenever he could. He sighed heavily; his morning latte was one of his few indulgences and it looked as though it was out of the question today.
Mulling over the idea of sneaking out to grab a replacement coffee distracted Stephen. In fact, as he swung the door of the stairwell open, he didn’t register the sight in front of him at first. There was a figure sprawled on the floor, a spreading puddle of something dark and wet beneath him. The man on the floor groaned, and Stephen’s brain caught up with what he was seeing.
He knelt down, tossing his papers and electronics aside as he reached for the man. “Are you okay?”
Thankfully, the dark wet puddle was spilled coffee, not blood, and the man blinked up at him as he shifted with a grimace. “Maybe?”
He went to sit up but let out a loud groan and slumped back. Stephen barely had enough time to catch him and keep his head from hitting the floor again. “Shit.” He finally got a good look at the guy and recognized him as Russ Bishop, one of the firm’s marketing analysts. The guy he hadn’t been able to take his eyes off since last year’s Christmas party. Ridiculous, since he was a good twenty years Stephen’s junior, but so handsome and charming, it hurt to look at him.
“Russ?” he asked urgently, and Russ’s dark brown eyes met his, a little hazy from pain, but fairly clear. “Lie there while I call the paramedics.”
“I don’t need the paramedics,” Russ protested. “I just need a moment to catch my breath and I’ll be fine.”
“Did you hit your head?” Stephen asked, swamped with guilt that he’d caused Russ’ accident.
Russ frowned. “No, I don’t think so. My ankle’s killing me though.” He lifted his hand and gingerly felt across his scalp, wincing. “Maybe I did.”
