REVIEW:
Awww… What a sweet story! I’ve said it before, I’ll probably say it again, Andrew Grey writes a good, sweet story. It is what he does, and he does it well. This is a nice coming of age, college boys fall in love story, with minimal drama, and no angst.
Brad is a college student, working part time to supplement his parental paid for education. He works evenings at a local grocery store, with his best friend Helen. One evening, he sees a beautiful boy pull in to the parking lot, singing and dancing his way through a bit of shopping. Brad stalks him around the store, but freezes up and can’t speak! He sees him several times around campus after that, but is too shy to say anything, besides, he sees Jordy has a boyfriend anyway. Then Brad’s parents ask him to go on a Thanksgiving cruise, and suggest he bring a friend. He asks Helen if she’ll go, and a few months later, they head off to Florida for a wonderful cruise. Imagine Brad’s surprise when he spots Jordy, his crush, on his cruise ship! Yeah, I know, it’s quite a coincidence, but just go with it! It works. Anyway, they connect, fun is had, love is started, and that’s all I’ll say!
The plot is minimal, but it’s still an enjoyable story. There are lots of details about life on a cruise ship, and a visit to the Caribbean islands, that was quite fun. I know from following Andrew on Facebook that he has been on that cruise, and it shows. He knows his stuff! I suspect he made an appearance in his book too, there is a recently married gay couple that have a cameo appearance that made me think of Andrew and his husband! There is not a lot of sex, they are on a ship afterall, but what there is was very sweet. There is that word again…. Sweet. It was just a sweet little book! I do like lots of drama and action in my books, but sometimes there is something comforting about a book like this. I knew what was going to happen and how it would end, and that was just fine. I think I said in my last review of one of Andrews books, that reading one of his lighter books is like watching a familiar TV show or a movie. You know what will happen, but you enjoy it anyway. Comfort food.
Brad and Jordy are a nice young couple, they work well together, and I’d actually like to see them again in five or ten years once they have grown up. They both have big plans to save the world, it would be fun to see what they make of themselves! The extra characters where good, I especially liked Helen, Brad’s best friend. She was a strong character on her own, and added a lot of interest to the story. Both boys families are quite visible as well, adding to the fun of the cruise.
Overall it was a light hearted, sweet (again with that word!), enjoyable book. If you have been reading heavy books, this one could provide a nice break, if you like Andrew Grey’s lighter books, you’ll probably like this one as well.
