Veteran park ranger Alexander Doyle is tracking a nuisance bear when he runs across obnoxious environmentalist Martin Ramirez. He and Martin have clashed before, when Martin and the protestors under his leadership ended a plan to expand the network of paved trails and improve accessibility. Given a choice, Alex would rather face the bear.
When the dangerous grizzly attacks them and Martin is gravely wounded, his only chance of survival is Alex’s determination to keep him alive through the night. But they’re stranded miles from any hope of rescue with the year’s first snowstorm coming in fast.
Review:
Park ranger Alex is having a really bad day. Having to put down an animal isn’t his favorite thing to do and then to make things worse, he runs into someone who just pushes all the wrong buttons for him.
Environmentalist Martin has made all the wrong assumptions about Alex and he’s thrown a curve ball when Alex turns out to be the opposite of what he thinks.
I liked this story. The quick banter mixed with the heart pounding action keeps you on your toes and draws you in. The author keeps you intrigued with smart writing and interesting characters. The plot keeps you hooked with non-stop action and I enjoyed how the two men moved from antagonism to camaraderie in the face of a catastrophe.
The only complaint I have about this story is that it’s way too short. I would have loved some anticipation and build up, something to make you gasp and worry for a bit.
It would be interesting to see more about Alex and Martin in the future and seeing how they make their unique situation work!
