LENGTH: 206 pages
BLURB:
Physics teacher Fenton Keene is looking forward to a summer of doing nothing but hanging out with friends and maybe getting into a little trouble. With his best friend out of town, trouble seems like the best option and it comes in the form of his building’s newest temporary resident, a gorgeous fireman named Kevin.
Fen’s been attracted to men before, but this is the first time he’s considered acting on it. And act he does.
Fen and Kevin have an intense summer fling. Just in time for Kevin to go home, more feelings develop than Fen can ignore, but they don’t stop Kevin from leaving. Once Kevin’s gone, Fen can’t stop thinking about him. That’s when reality sets in and Fen faces the difficulties of distance and fidelity, while Kevin balks at Fen’s reluctance to tell his friends and family. They just need to find a way to make their magic more practical.
REVIEW:
I really enjoyed Newton’s Laws of Attraction, but I loved Impractical Magic!
Fen was my favorite character from NLoA – Ben’s straight BFF and I was thrilled to find out he was getting his own book. This story picks up before the ending of Newton’s Laws of Attraction, Ben is in LA and he and Rory have not reconciled yet, summer vacation has started and Fen, Rory and Jeremy are restless and missing Ben. Fen in particular is having a hard time; he is out of sorts and feeling unsettled.
Fen is such a lovely, sweet, goofy, klutzy man, when he first meets Kevin; he is at the pool not wearing his contacts and ends ups with a whole tube of sunscreen squirted on his legs. Kevin is young and gorgeous; he is in Chico for the summer, covering for his uncle at the local firehouse and has moved into Fen’s building for the duration of his stay. Fen is smitten.
See, the thing was, Fen wasn’t exactly straight. Exactly.
Seems Fen has always been attracted to men, he has just never done anything about it. Kevin though, is someone he definitely wants to do something about, with, to – you name it. When Fen runs into Kevin (and an Orange display) at the supermarket he invites him to dinner at his apartment. One dinner grows into many and their friendship grows and develops into something more. Fen introduces Kevin to his friends Rory and Jeremy and is very happy that he fits as comfortably with his friends as he does with him. When summer ends and it is time for Kevin leave, Fen is not sure where that leaves them. Will he ever see Kevin again? How can they have a future?
The scenes between Fen and Kevin are sweet and sexy. M.J. O’Shea is great at creating characters you can fall in love with and cheer for. She does an awesome job of resolving the issues keeping them apart and giving Fen the HEA he so deserves.
