This year’s GayRomLit in Chicago will be my third. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much my life has changed since that wonderful, first one in New Orleans.
Back then I was still in a long-term relationship that was coming to an end, and I was in the process of accepting that fact and figuring out how to deal with it. It was a complicated relationship with a married male/female couple that I hadn’t been happy with for some time.
Part of the enjoyment of the weekend in New Orleans was not having to hide my sexuality like I had to do in my everyday life. Additionally, it became cathartic to talk to people about my relationship.
The wonderful tasting hurricanes had nothing to do with the sudden absence of my shyness; I’m sure.
One person I talked to about my relationship asked me if I was happy, and when I admitted I wasn’t, he asked why I stayed in it. It was a good question, one I couldn’t really answer. He went on to tell me I deserved better, much better.
That evening included lots more alcohol, and a few pictures sent to my boyfriend to make him jealous. It succeeded, and he and I had a lot to talk about when I got home.
The following year, at Albuquerque, I was no longer in the aforementioned relationship, though our lives were still intertwined. That was a wonderful, amazing weekend, partially because I spent so much time with British author Daniel Kaine.
It was a truly fun and exciting weekend that was part of moving emotionally further away from my ex-boyfriend. Ours had been an on-again, off-again relationship, but we were never officially together again after Albuquerque.
At that point I knew I would find someone who would make me happy and more importantly that my ex was not my soul mate, nor a particularly good person.
By the time registration for the Atlanta GRL rolled around, I had just become unemployed and couldn’t afford the cost. When the event actually occurred I had moved from Nevada to Oregon and was actively dating, though that may be the incorrect word since there weren’t that many dates, just a lot of men.
I have moved on emotionally from my ex, though our lives are forever entwined. My daughter is married to his son. Yes, I am basically related to my ex-boyfriend, and we share grandchildren. We’re friends, and I’ve (pretty much) forgiven him.
Now, I am in a new relationship, six months together, and happier than I’ve been in a long time. I’m hoping Demetri will make to Chicago GRL but most likely he won’t be able to take the time off. Regardless, Chicago is going to be lots of fun. The man I am there will be vastly different than the man I was in New Orleans.
About the Author :
Ethan Stone is a duck once again. After more than a decade away from the soggy state of Oregon he is back in his home state. Ethan is Graciously offering a copy of Bartender P.I for a Lucky winner who enters the rafflecopter giveaway below 🙂
Blurb:
When hockey star Linc Carpenter is banned from playing his beloved sport, he starts over slinging drinks in Tampa. He’s inept as a bartender, so when the opportunity arises to train as a private investigator he takes it. He’s not very good at that either, but he still manages to get hired to follow fashion mogul Quentin Faulkner.
Linc’s incompetence is a hindrance, but Brady Williams, Faulkner’s studly bodyguard, may prove to be his undoing. Brady is drawn to Linc, despite his bungling, and that stupidity may be just what’s needed to solve the case and save their lives.
Second Edition. A scene of approximately 2,000 words was added.

I’m so glad you found someone to make you happy. It’s amazing how we can all end up sticking with a broken relationship, even when does more harm than good. The boyfriend prior to my husband is a prime example. Not healthy at all for either of us. If we hadn’t have broken up I might not have met my awesome husband. If anything, bad relationships help us figure out what a good one should look like 🙂
Congrats on the new relationship. This book sounds very intriguing and is going on my TBR list. Thanks for an opportunity to win a copy.
Looking forward to meeting you in Chicago. Congratulations on your new, happier relationship.
Thanks so much for having me.
Thank you for sharing this with us and isn’t it ironic that even though you can your separate ways, in a relationship, that somehow something still intertwines you and you to have to remain in contact and try to stay cordial. And normally it all seems to happen at the same time, unemployment, money issues, have a new job, having to move, etc. I am so glad that things are looking better and that you are now in a happier place and relationship.
Thank you for giving us a chance to win one of your titles Bartender PI
