Welcome to Love Bytes E.M 🙂
Writing is terrifying.
I cannot think of another hobby or profession, apart from perhaps pole dancing, where a person puts so much of their self out there on display. Writing is an intensely personal thing. It comes from somewhere deep inside. All the words you choose; the sentences you construct; how you create your characters; what you make them do to each other–it all pours from a writer’s imagination, and heart.
And it’s damn terrifying putting your heart out there for others to see and dissect.
I have identified three top-most terrifying moments for me as a writer. Coming in at number one on the all-time scary list is a new book’s release day.
Whilst it’s very exciting to see a project that I’ve been working hard on over the past months finally come to life, it’s also totally petrifying. Your own personal Judgement Day.
I liken it to giving birth, the only difference being people are usually too kind to tell you if your human baby is really, really ugly. They’re not so polite about your book baby.
And of course once it’s out there, I’m suddenly thinking and worrying about all the things I could have (and probably should have) changed before it went to publication. And then I start to have my doubts – did the editors really feel it was the best it could be, or were they just sick of working with me in the end?
It is hard to know when to stop fiddling (aka editing). I have an artist friend who, when he goes to visit the homes of people that have bought his drawings, takes along a pencil and eraser in his pocket. He’s been sprung on more than one occasion making changes to a picture as it hangs on the owner’s wall. A little extreme perhaps, but I can empathise with that. When is something ever truly finished? How do you know when you’ve got it right or when to just darn well leave it alone already?
When I finally feel I’ve got a new story as good as I can (or when I just get tired of fiddling with it any longer), queue terrifying moment number two…
The instant that email leaves my outbox winging my new manuscript submission straight over to a publisher’s desk, I have a mini conniption. In that split-second the gut-churning, nail biting turmoil begins. I will feel excitement that I finally got the bloody thing finished, hope that the publisher will like it, anxiety that they won’t and horror at my stupidity for actually sending it to them, all wrapped up together in one tumultuous package.
This feeling will continue for the days/weeks/months that it takes to hear from them, finally culminating in the mother of all hangovers, either because I am celebrating a new contract or drowning the sorrows of rejection. Thankfully these days I tend to have more happy hangovers than sad ones.
Again, it’s a bit like childbirth. When I have that new contract in my hand I suddenly forget about all the time, pain and anxiety it took to get there. I will call up my friends and family and tell them the wonderful news.
And suddenly I’ll run head-first into terrifying moment number three: My mother will ask if she can read the story…
Josh and Dan have been best friends since grade school. Now Dan is getting married and Josh is to be his best man. When Dan confesses after his buck’s show that he’s getting cold feet, Josh – who can’t help feeling a little jealous of his friend – doesn’t understand why he wouldn’t want to marry the gorgeous Rachel Moore.
Everything becomes clear later after a few drinks. They share a kiss that leads to them having sex and Josh finds out the best friend he thought he knew so well is actually gay. He doesn’t know how to deal with this or his guilt when he has to face Dan’s fiancée and tell her what happened. Especially when he starts to develop his own feelings for Dan.
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
“Uh, maybe we should stop now,” Josh croaked in a voice he didn’t recognise as his own.
He glanced down as Dan looked up at him; eyes dark and his expression unreadable in the dim light. “Don’t you like it?”
“Too much,” Josh admitted, feeling a hot flush rise at his honesty.
Dan grinned. “It would be a lot more comfortable if we took this somewhere else. Like the bedroom?”
There was no ambiguity in his words. Raw lust danced in his eyes. He licked his lips and Josh felt a sudden throbbing in his groin. Perhaps it was the alcohol clouding his judgement, but it seemed so right taking Dan down the narrow corridor and into his room.
The curtains were open and the room was bathed in moonlight giving it a bluish hue. Josh watched, almost trance-like as Dan pulled off his T-shirt to reveal a superbly toned, beautifully proportioned torso. His breath hitched as Dan took a step towards him and his mouth came down on his again in a blistering kiss.
As their arms wrapped around each other, their bare chests touched. Heat seared between them, fanning the flames of desire, deepening their kiss and yearning for each other.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
EM Rose loves sexy men and loud music. Even better if they are sexy rock stars playing loud music! She has a particular soft spot for singers and guitarists – especially if they have long hair. Her first book Jordy’s Song, published last year by Steam eReads is about the dramas of a rock band on the road, and was inspired by many sexy (long-haired) rock stars she has known in real life or drooled over in her fantasies. Her ‘First Time’ series is all about that moment hot, sexy males decide to cross the line into the world of man love – gotta love that!

Love the excerpt and the comments on trials and tribulations of getting a book published, as you put quite a lot of yourself into a book and possible rejection and non-constructive criticism can be devastating. Thank you for a chance of winning one of your titles
