Title: Benjamin Pepperwhistle and the Fantabulous Circus of Wonders
Author: Cornelia Grey
Pages: 58
Publisher: Storm Moon Press LLC
Blurb:
Benjamin Pepperwhistle has one overriding desire: to handle the glorious machinery that is a gun. So when he decides to run away to join the circus, it’s only natural that he should seek out the legendary pistoleer, Cole Beauchamp, and beg to be his assistant. Life in the circus has definite ups and downs, but as Benjamin settles in to his role, he finds that some perks are even better than he’d anticipated.
Review:
I hope people that see my rating and even read this review still give both this short and this author a chance because I really have loved some of her work. This, however, just bored me and I think it all depends on your mood and your perception of the kink.
Benjamin Pepperwhistle is a man seeking out the pistoleer, Cole Beauchamp, a performer in the circus, with the hope that he can be an assistant to the man he so admires. It’s really a story about their shared love of everything guns – the damage they can cause, the power one yields when holding one, the submission and surrender to willingly stand in front of one, the sounds of the explosions, the whoosh of the bullet zipping by close to you, and the smells of the gunpowder and oils. I’ll give the author and the story credit for making those detailed moments feel alive, as if I was right there as a voyeur to the experience.
But that’s where I stopped liking the story. I felt the pace dragged considerably and in only 50 or so pages, I found myself incredibly bored throughout. I continuously found myself putting it down, letting my mind wander, forgetting the characters’ names, and I failed to see how this was so incredibly sexy. The gun kink in Dark Soul was dark and sensuous because I felt the same way about the characters, but the kink in this felt short-changed and flat, again, the way I felt about the characters.
It’s a nice story, just not one I’ll want to re-read.
