Kidnapped. Again. Honestly, Eddie Goodman isn’t surprised. As the son of crime-fighting superheroes with no powers of his own, he’s used to living with a target on his back. Now, the League of Evil has him in their clutches once more. However, Eddie’s not familiar with this particular villain, whose name seems to echo the shadows he controls. Shadow isn’t as disgusting as the others, like the fiendish Duke Naughty who’s been after Eddie for a long time. With a master’s degree in Psychology, Eddie calls on his talent to analyze the mind of this new supervillain and finds he’s not so evil, just a little… dark.
When Shadow saves Eddie from those intending him harm, blurring the lines between good and evil, Eddie realizes battling this new enemy—and his growing infatuation with the enigmatic man—won’t be easy. As Eddie struggles to understand Shadow’s motivations and his own feelings, he realizes Shadow is exactly the kind of Dominant he’d usually go for, and worse yet, Shadow seems to sense Eddie’s submissive nature. Eddie’s mind might not want to submit to a supervillain, but his body certainly does.
REVIEW:
I saw the blurb for this book and thought, “Self, this seems like it will be a fun book, let’s read it.” I’m really glad that I did. This was such a fun book.
So, Eddie Goodman is part of a family of super heroes and he’s the only one without one. Being in a famous family of super heroes and not having any powers manifest is hard for Eddie. It also makes him such a target for super villians who’d love the chance to kidnap and torture him. It’s happened before. Eddie tries to live a good life. He has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and volunteers his services at Manhattan Psychiatric Center. Eddie is such a good guy. He’s got loyalty for his family and friends. He only wants to help and to be able to live his life in peace. He’s also submissive. He also really wants to find the Dom that he can fully let go with. To fully be able to submit to the one person with whom he knows that loves and will take care of him. Eddie has such a good heart. I really liked him. I liked the fact that he was fun and a bit sarcastic. I liked that he always stood up for himself. That he wouldn’t let anyone keep the upper hand. I liked that he was a survivor.
Shadow, aka Vlad, is the guy who currently kidnaps Eddie. Now, I liked Shadow from the very beginning. He never hurt Eddie in any way. Shadow isn’t all good, nor is he all bad. He’s the guy who is just making it through. Shadow is mysterious, sexy and a bit aloof. Vlad on the other hand, is just as sexy and a whole lot more approachable. He’s also a Dom and that just calls to Eddie. Granted, Eddie calls to Vlad’s Dom all the same. I loved the duality of Shadow/Vlad. I like that you never know who is doing the thinking. He’s such a great character. I really liked him.
The secondary characters in this story didn’t really have much screen time, as this really was mostly about Eddie and Shadow/Vlad. But I liked Curly and Wolf Boy, two of Eddie’s really good friends and also Super Heroes in their own right. They both really love and care about Eddie and it was nice to know that he has those people in his corner. Eddie’s brother, Nick aka Captain Good, he’s this great guy and he really loves his little brother. He wants his brother to know that he’s loved and to be able to keep him safe. General Justice and Angel, Nick and Eddie’s father and mother..Chad and Hope Goodman, respectively. They love their children. They don’t always go about it the way that Eddie understands, but he knows that they love him. Duke Naughty…I just love his name. I will say that the Duke is Batshit crazy..but he’s funny. He’s so sadistic and yet, he was kinda funny to me.
This book was set in what would be a nice alternate universe where super heroes and villians were known and took their special brand of crazy on the road. It was great to read a book that was really fun and easy. There was a bit of angst, but overall, just a really pleasant read.
There was a bit of light BDSM in this story. It was more D/s than BDSM, but it was always tastefully done and it didn’t overwhelm the story in the least. It only added to the deepening bond between Eddie and Shadow/Vlad.
I will say that this was a nice change of pace for me. I’m not that big in Sci-Fi books, but this was just sweet and fluffy enough to make it a really good read. I liked the premise of the story and the author carried it off. The story dragged a bit for me, but overall…well worth reading.
