REVIEW:
I love Science Fiction and I love finding new authors, so I was excited to read this. I liked the premise of waking up one morning to find your world in chaos and a good alien abduction can be fun, but I had a hard time finishing this book.
Rusty and Hal are great characters; I loved their relationship, how much they cared for each other. They don’t let their deafness limit them in any way. When to book opens Rusty is preparing a surprise for Hal for their Valentine’s Day, he is making his favorite dinner and desert and has a special after dinner treat for him down in their bomb shelter Rusty had built in their basement. Hal thinks Rusty is a little paranoid, but the main reason Rusty built the room was so that both of them could get away from technology – Hal constantly checks his cell phone and lap top – in the bomb shelter there is no cell reception and no internet connection. After spending a romantic evening together they wake up the next morning to find their house destroyed, they search the town but everything and everyone is gone.
What I liked about the book:
Hal and Rusty – they are sweet and loving to each other
The Plot – evil aliens, high jacked humans, action and adventure
What I didn’t like:
The pacing – the book dragged in some places then the action would speed up and them drag again. It didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have.
It was too long – there were parts that didn’t seem to add to the story and made it clunky.
This is a personal issue, but I hate names that are difficult to pronounce and read or are just silly. Mindjask, Nji, Lawpick bothered me as I read them. Again this is a personal peeve and should be taken as such.
This is the first book in a series and the first book by this author who I think is talented, I would like to see where he takes this story as he grows as a writer.
