BLURB:
In an attempt to atone for his sins and find some solace, ADA Agent Gabriel Romero helps other Deviants in need. Gabriel finds his new charge unexpectedly attractive, and that’s a complication he does not want—one he thinks he doesn’t deserve.
Despite the frosty reception from the stubborn agent who rescued him, sheltered telepath Alex feels an instant connection through the pain he sees in Gabriel’s eyes, and he does everything he can to gain his attention. The realities he must face while mastering his ability are hard, but failing to learn to defend himself is not an option. Soon he’ll need his newfound strength to convince Gabriel he deserves to live and love again.
REVIEW:
I actually had a friend recommend this book to me about a week before the request for a review was sent to the blog so I figured it was fate and I was meant to read it. I know a lot of people loved this one because of the paranormal theme but it was recommended to me because there’s nothing I love more than a nice big age gap.
Gabriel is an ADA Agent, his job is to rescue and protect Deviants, humans who are born with special powers and who are targeted by the Normals. He has secrets in his past that no one else knows about which makes for a deliciously dark, brooding main character. Gabriel is a Deviant himself and he has a rather awesome power that he can use to basically dissolve the baddies bones. He leads a team of four men and their latest mission is to rescue imprisoned Deviant twins Alex and Jason.
Alex and Jason were running from town to town until they were finally caught and now find themselves locked in a cell. When Gabriel and his team arrive in the night to free them they have no choice but to trust their rescuers and they’re whisked away to an isolated house where they can learn to control their powers and live undetected by the Normals.
Sound familiar? Yes, it’s very much X Men and honestly, I think that’s what most people like best about it. I know it’s what I like best and I’m not even that big a fan of the movies. There are a whole lot of characters introduced, good guys and bad guys, and it is a little hard to keep track of who is who, especially when it comes to Gabriel’s team and the people who provide support for them.
As for the reason I read this book, the age gap (which I think is about 15years?) it actually didn’t work for me this time. Gabriel was such a strong, no nonsense character I truly don’t understand what he could have found to attract him to Alex. Alex is a bit of a dummy. Do I sound childish? Well so is he. Yes, I love an age gap but even though Alex is nineteen he acts far too immature to be one half of a serious couple, especially when the other half is such a mature character. And there’s insta-love, then there’s Alex speed love. I just couldn’t buy that these two men could find themselves in a serious relationship.
I guess there are two potential second books here and I’d be happy to read either one. Although I was a bit underwhelmed by the relationship between these MCs I really liked the characters and the world the author created and I hope there’s more to read soon.
