BLURB: Is it possible for two Civil War veterans to find their place in the world on the Kansas Prairie?
When the War Between the States ended in 1865 many Americans emerged from the turmoil energized by their possibilities for the future. Frank Greerson and Gregory Young were no different. After battling southern rebels and preserving the Union, the two men set out to battle the Kansas Prairie and build a life together. Frank yearned for his own farm, away from his family—even at the risk of alienating them. Gregory, an only child, returned home to claim his inheritance to help finance their adventure out west.
Between the difficult work of establishing a farm on the unforgiving Kansas prairie, and the additional obstacles provided by the weather, Native Americans and wild animals, will their love and loyalty be enough to sustain them through the hardships?
REVIEW:
This is tender, sweet love story is between Frank and Gregory. Their story isn’t really so much a romance or even a western/cowboy story. It’s more than that. It’s the story of two men who ARE going to share their lives together and some of the trials that they are going through.
Frank and Gregory met as soldiers during the Civil War and during that time they became a romantic couple. Their love for each other is so very tender and it sustains them. They have to lie to everyone regarding the nature of their relationship. Just saying that they were friends and not a couple because they knew that they would be ostracized and maybe even killed for loving each other. Their love is so tender and sweet and so very gentle. Their story spoke of a love that went so deeply and was so very strong.
Their story takes place over the course of a couple of years as they move west and try their hands owning claims. The story was full of events that helped to shape them as well as pull them closer together as a couple. There was action and heartbreak in this story. Yet, our two MC’s stood strong in the face of adversity.
This story was one of love and devotion. It also was of strength and following your dreams and knowing that sometimes, the path isn’t what you thought it would be. This story had no intimate moments in it. It wasn’t even alluded to. It think that it there were some intimate moments between the two of them, it would have brought the characters out more to me. Made them a bit more dynamic to me. To see that level of commitment between them would have been nice.
As this was the debut novel of L. Dean Pace-Frech, it was very well done. The writing flowed pretty well, however, I did find that it seemed a bit jumpy. I didn’t like how the story skipped parts. I would have liked to see how they spent that winter with Gregory’s mom. That was a huge deal for me. I felt that so much was skipped that could have brought more depth to the characters and to the story.
Overall, this story was really a sweet, tender and very loving. If you are looking for a story that will show you the a bit of the old west and two men in love and a giving, tender romance…than this is the story for you.
