Recently returned to the UK after living in the States since he was eleven, Andrew Barrett is determined to keep busy and make a new life for himself. He works full time as a copywriter and strips at a club on Canal Street on weekends. But it still leaves him too much time to think. Then he finds the BDSM club, Collars & Cuffs, where at twenty-nine, he is their youngest Dom. Young doesn’t mean inexperienced, however. All this activity keeps him focused with no time to dwell on the past. But the past has a way of intruding on the present.
It’s been four long years since Gareth Michaels last set foot inside Collars & Cuffs. But when he finally summons his courage and steps back into his former world, he finds the man who drove him away is still a member, and what’s more, he wants Gareth back. Two men in pain need the freedom they find in each other, but it takes another man’s horrific plans to make them see it.
Review:
I have been looking forward to this book since I found out it was coming K.C. Wells has fast become one of my favorite writers and her view of the BDSM world is captivating.
Andrew and Gareth’s story starts out slow. We are introduced to each character and the people around them, letting the anticipation build and the story unfold.
I love getting to see a little of Leo and Miles and the rest of the men from Collars and Cuffs. It’s like visiting old friends and it makes me happy to have a glimpse into those characters happily-ever-after.
Andrew is a man I fell for right away. I found the fact that he was a Dom and a stripper almost strange at first as to me they almost seemed to be at cross purposes, another one of those pre-conceived notions that I quickly got over. He’s complicated and smart and the pain from his past has left its mark on him.
Gareth is a sub who’s a little lost without the guidance his nature craves but his fear and hurt is almost overwhelming until he meets Andrew and he’s given a little hope for the future. Gareth is sweet and kind, someone who’s inclination to take care of people makes him a good friend to those he loves.
The way they two men dance around each other as they try to figure out how to let the other into their lives is as sweet as it is painful and I love the little nudges they get from their friends, who can see how good they would be for each other.
The course of love never runs smooth, however and the angst in this story comes from both within the two men and from an outside source from Gareth’s past. Both issues are difficult to overcome but with a little help from their friends, Andrew and Gareth pick their way through the minefield.
I love how the author shows us both voices in this story. It’s not always something that works for me, going back and forth between two different POV’s but Wells does it skillfully, never leaving me confused or wondering who’s head I was in.
I honestly can’t think of one thing that didn’t work for me in this book and I can’t come up with a critique of any kind, something that is very unusual for me.
This story is smart and well written and I think it’s a worthy addition to a wonderful series that I heartily recommend and I’m desperately hoping that this isn’t that last time that Ms. Wells will step foot inside Collars and Cuffs.
