GRL Featured Blogger Post : Guestpost & Giveaway Rhys Ford

In our GRL Blog Tour we of Love Bytes are very proud to welcome Author Rhys Ford to our blog 🙂

I am by nature an adventurous sort where food and travel come in. Sometimes it’s not the best thing to be—mostly because I end up going in where angels fear to tread but hey, so far—no harm, no foul. However, imagine my disgust when recently a friend of mine trotted out the odd fact that she puts kale into her smoothies.

When I was done throwing up in my brain, my response was: Kale is for soup.

Because really, kale is what you make Portuguese bean soup with. Or watercress which I actually prefer but kale works.

Not in a fruit smoothie.

This topic came up later in the week and someone said; I do that too. And spinach. You can’t even taste the kale or spinach.

This time, there was an assortment of gagging and bleching then someone said; if you can’t taste it, why bother?

While the conversation then disintegrated into it’s good for you and you can get that in a vitamin pill, my brain kind of wandered off to the dichotomy of the conversation. One side was focused on the internal benefits while the other side was pinned down to the experience and taste.

Both aren’t wrong (okay kale in a fruit smoothie is wrong but… that’s my opinion)—both aren’t wrong but it sort of highlighted perspective. What is more important or rather, what drives an individual’s choices.

I think the same can be said for books. We all want a bit of different things. Some internal conflict and others external stimulus. Some don’t mind kale with fruit while others want savoury.

I’d have to say with books, I lean more towards the savoury although yes, I do want to add a little zest in my writing. Coming to the subject at hand—The Devil’s Brew and kale—I think I might have added kale to the blueberry-banana smoothie instead of tossing it into potatoe and sausage soup. How did I come to that conclusion?

One, no one dies. And I do love a good bloodbath so no murdering fiends popping up would qualify as a fruity in nature but also because it’s…when you come down to it…sweet.

I wanted to write something sweet with a bit of a vitamin kick added to it because there are things revealed and matters discussed.

I hope you enjoy it. Truly. It was lovely to write and oh, I do adore writing for Miki and well, the men in his life.

The Devils Brew Rhys Ford CoverThe Devil’s Brew

Miki St. John’s life has been turned upside down but it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

His best friend, Damien Mitchell, is back from the dead. He has a dog named Dude. And more importantly, he and his lover, SFPD Inspector Kane Morgan, now share Miki’s converted warehouse.

For the first time ever, Miki’s living a happy and normal-ish life but when Valentine’s Day rolls around, Miki realizes he knows next to nothing about being domestic or domesticated. Nothing about the traditional lover’s holiday makes sense to him but Miki wants to give Kane a Valentine’s Day the man will never forget.

Can he pull off a day of wine and roses? Or will his screwed up childhood come back and bite Miki in the ass?

Again.

Rhys Ford was born and raised in Hawai’i then wandered off to see the world. After chewing through a pile of books, a lot of odd food, and a stray boyfriend or two, Rhys eventually landed in San Diego, which is a very nice place but seriously needs more rain.

Rhys admits to sharing the house with three cats of varying degrees of black fur and a ginger cairn terrorist. Rhys is also enslaved to the upkeep a 1979 Pontiac Firebird, a Toshiba laptop, and an overworked red coffee maker.

  1. I’m not convinced on kale or spinach in smoothies . Looking forward to when The Devil’s Brew is out 🙂

  2. Great post! I can’t say I’d want kale in a fruit smoothie either. I’ve been wanting to read your books for while, so thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  3. I get the health benefits of kale, but I don’t believe you can’t taste it in a fruit smoothie. 🙁 I have not started the Sinners Series (plan to soon), but I recently read the entire Cole McGinnis series and it has become one of my favs. Thanks for the post and giveaway!

  4. While I love kale, I like it the Portuguese way…braised for a long time with linguica, with a dash of vinegar on top. Raw just makes my stomach contort, and putting it in any form of dessert (I’ve seen it in brownies! BROWNIES?!) is just wrong…

  5. I have been enjoying reading the Cole McGinnis series and have the other series on my wish list. I much prefer adding ginger to smoothies, it adds a nice tang 😀

  6. Processed and artificial chemicals via pill form or blueberry banana tasting smoothie with the health benefits of kale but not the taste (because we all know how many of you don’t like to eat your greens), hmm…pause for thought. 🙂 Now on to the more important part of this blog post, wahoo more books from Rhys!

  7. I love spinach, but not in smoothies and I think I may have only eaten kale a few times. It’d take a lot for someone to convince me to put them in a smoothie. They’d probably have to bribe me.

  8. I’m a huge fan and can’t wait to read more of Mike & Kane. Love Kale but no go in a smoothie – that’s just yuck!

  9. Congrats on your latest release and thanks for the giveaway! I like kale but I’m not sure if I would want it in my smoothie.

  10. I’m with the side that says “Add kale to the smoothie, it’s good for you and you can’t taste it.” I can’t wait, in a few hours I can download The Devil’s Brew, which means I can’t really win anything here, because I already own the whole backlist as far as I can tell. Keep up the good work! 🙂

    1. Oops, I have this on my Kindle now. It’s Tequila Mockingbird I’m still anxiously awaiting. (embarrassed!)

  11. I haven’t read the series yet but keep hearing good things. I’ll have to give it a read soon.

  12. I LOVE the Sinner’s Gin series, also the Cole McGinnis, Heck I love all things Rhys Ford! I can’t wait for Devil’s Brew!

Please take a minute to leave a comment it is so appreciated !
