TITLE: Unbroken Hearts
SERIES: Unbreak My Heart #2
AUTHOR: K-lee Klein
PUBLISHER: Amber Allure
LENGTH: 85 pages
BLURB: JT Campbell knows Brett Taylor’s proclamation of love a few months earlier was true and honest, and Brett’s nothing if not sweet and attentive. But when the most romantic day of the year rolls around and Brett seems to be ignoring it, JT finds himself drowning in disappointment. Growing up, JT was never allowed to celebrate Valentine’s Day and was taught to reject the sappy, fake sentiments of the holiday. But would it be too much to expect Brett to at least acknowledge the day?
On top of that, JT can’t help but feel uneasy about the one huge reminder still standing on the ranch of Brett’s old lover. JT tries hard to pretend it doesn’t bother him, but he worries that as long as it’s there, Brett will never fully be able to let Walt go and move forward with JT. Can an unexpected show of love and commitment soothe JT’s fears?
REVIEW:
Unbreak My Heart was one of the first books I got to review for this blog, so I was really happy to get the chance to review the sequel/short, Unbroken Hearts.
It is Valentine’s Day now, and life has been going pretty good for JT and Brett. They are happily living together on Brett’s ranch, they are just as madly in love, and old wounds are starting to resemble scars more than open cuts. Some days are still tough, and happily-ever-after doesn’t come without a bump or two on the road, but neither man could see themselves walking that road without the other by their side.
So things should be perfect, right? Except JT can’t help but feel a little let down that his first Valentine’s Day–with a lover and not just a random fuck–is somewhat underwhelming. He wasn’t expecting hearts and candies, with rose petals falling down around them while they made love (not that he would turn that down), but a double date with Brett’s mama and Ray, preceded by a day of having the man he loves basically ditch him, just sucks. He loves Brett, and he knows that Brett loves him–but some parts of him can’t help but think that there are some parts of Brett that he is never going to get. And sharing with a ghost is just a losing battle all round.
This was a really enjoyable follow-up to Unbreak My Heart. And really my only complaint is that it is not a full story in its own right, because I absolutely love this series. K-lee Klein has a great way of writing characters that feel very unique, here, and even though it has been almost six months since I read the first book in this series, I can pretty much remember everything that they went through. Their story seems to have stuck with me. And watching them after the I-love-yous were finally spoken, and real life is starting to bleed in, was nice.
This book was solely from JT’s perspective, and while I would have loved to see Brett as he went about of this Valentine’s Day, it was nice to spend some time with JT. For one it kept the mystery alive as to what exactly was going on in Brett’s head, but maybe I just identify more with ex cali-boy, than I have ever done with Brett–and with JT’s struggle to not fall back into his whole southern prejudices, even when the love of his life was being an ass.
And we finally get some closer on the events that happened at the end on the first book. Which was good since that was one of my biggest hang-ups with Unbreak My Heart (and yes, I’m being purposefully vaguein case you haven’t read the first one–which you really should do). It was nice to see that it wasn’t just swept under the rug, and that both guys had to find peace with it.
All in all, this was a lovely follow-up, and while I would have loved it to be longer, it gave me enough that I was satisfied with our little trip back into the South. The characters are always going to be one of my favorites, and I really do hope that we get more with JT and Brett.
