Hey Cherie, Write us a Song!
So Cat and I wrote a rock star book. Her first, my second. And while we’ve got a pretty good handle on this whole prose thing, we both fall completely flat when it comes to writing song lyrics.
Some of you may have read my previous rock star book, With the Band. You may recall there are some lyrics in there, and you would be right…but I didn’t write them. My awesomely talented friend Lia Wolff wrote them for me.
In Guarded, there’s a song called Forth Into Light that’s a significant part of the story. Jordan Kane, our main character, has been struggling to finish the song for years, and it’s deeply meaningful to him. The lyrics are super important, and we knew we couldn’t botch this one, so we decided our best bet was to enlist some outside help. We threw out a plea on social media, asking if anyone who could write song lyrics would help us out.
Cherie Noel responded almost immediately.
I gave her a rundown of the characters, the story, and what the song meant. Within the hour, she’d come back with the first verse. By the end of the afternoon, the whole thing was done.
Quite frankly, I think she was just trying to make us look bad, because while the idea of writing song lyrics makes us both tear our hair out, she conjures gems like this like it’s easy:
Close my eyes and I almost hear you breathe
Rush in the veins takes me high enough to see
Lamplight’s crown on the magic that you weave
Beautiful boy with forever up your sleeve
And
I dream your eyes are laughing still
No more goodbyes, no bitter pills
No more white rooms, no more white walls
The wind that howled is silent now
Seriously. We turn her loose in Jordan Kane’s mind for like two hours, and she comes back with GOLD.
So this is a huge, huge thank you to Cherie from Cat and me for giving Jordan the words to express the feelings he could only put into a song, and so much more eloquently than we could have.
Blurb:
On the surface, rock star Jordan Kane has it all. His band No Rules is burning up the charts and headlining a world tour. His bodyguard doubles as a hot, kinky boyfriend who knows just how to push all his buttons. But behind the scenes, he’s suffocating.
Jase Hewitt never imagined he’d have a shot at bedding the larger than life rock star – never mind dominating him – but now he’s worried he’s in over his head. Jordan’s kinks run deep, dark, and sometimes dangerous, putting Jase’s desires to both pleasure and protect him at odds.
They might have a fighting chance at finding the safe, happy medium between what Jordan needs and what Jase is willing to give, but there’s one problem: Daniel, Jordan’s childhood best friend, the band’s talented guitarist — and a volatile, hard-partying drug addict. Jordan is determined to save Daniel from himself, but Jase has been there, done that, and desperately wants to protect Jordan from the inevitable heartache of watching an addict self-destruct.
When Daniel goes off the rails again, Jordan calls off the tour to get him help. Tension within the band skyrockets and pressure from the record label sends Jordan into a dark spiral. Now his band — and his life — are balanced on a knife’s edge, and Jase is the only one who can pull him back… but only if the echoes of his own tragic past don’t push him over first.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.

Thanks for the look at your book. It looks fantastic! Onto the wishlist it goes. Thanks for the giveaway too.
Wow, a subject near and dear to my heart. My daughter’s a music journalist who interviews rock stars, which means that we attend many concerts. And of course m/m is our favorite genre of books. This will be one we definitely have to read.
Thank you for offering the chance to win a copy. 🙂

Just finished Guarded this morning. It is simply sensational. Don’t know if it will inspire my writing or make me close up the laptop. Cherie Noel’s lyrics made me cry.
I can’t wait to read this book!!!!!
This is so cool…love Cherie’s work too, and it’ll be fun to see how her lyrics fit in!
Okay. Let’s be clear here. Jordan, Jase and Daniel were so fully fleshed, so real and immediate… well, it was easy to write lyrics for them. It was a great honor and a mind boggling privilege to be allowed to walk in their world for an afternoon.
Thank you, Cat and L.A. for letting me play with the band. 🙂
