REVIEW: While A Place For Cliff is book number two in the Dominion of Brothers series it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. In fact that’s how I read it and although I’m aware that Cliff first appeared in book number one, I didn’t feel as though I was missing any important information.
When I selected this book to review I was also offered the first book but chose to decline because the first story is m/f. And unfortunately I think this is what may limit the popularity of this series. It seems to me the series has wedged itself into a pretty tight niche that many people aren’t interested in visiting. There are a lot of people who won’t read an m/m book. There are m/m readers who won’t read m/f. Many people won’t read BDSM and then you get unreasonably fussy people like me who specifically won’t read m/f BDSM. But obviously the author has the right to write what they enjoy, and I don’t mean any of what I just said as a criticism. I just don’t think the series will be as popular as it could have been if it was written entirely as m/f or m/m. Which is a shame because I enjoyed this story.
Our two main characters are Cliff and Pyotr (my brain just says Peter because that’s easier). Cliff is a regular at BDSM club, Club Pain, and fancies himself a Dom. When the Patronus instructs him to visit psychologist, Pyotr, he reluctantly does as he’s ordered, assuming he’ll just show up and discuss his ill sister.
Pyotr is the epitome of a Dominant and recognizes Cliff as his perfect sub. Although there are twenty two years between them they’re both instantly attracted to the other and Cliff very quickly gets with the program and admits to himself that he’s not a Dom at all.
Now this might all sound a bit wrong. Pyotr is almost twice Cliff’s age and technically he was acting as Cliff’s doctor. Trust me, many other characters in this story question their relationship. But you’ll also have to trust me that there’s nothing creepy about it. Looking at their relationship from the outside I would have called Cliff a gold digging princess with Daddy issues and Pyotr a nasty pervert who takes advantage. Luckily we’re not on the outside. Were privy to both characters thoughts and emotions and you can feel that the love and need between them is very real.
And hot. And sexy and steamy and deliciously descriptive and sometimes startlingly public. Pyotr is a self confessed exhibitionist with a voracious appetite and Cliff, his bratty yet obedient sub is more than happy to help him sate those cravings. Not, as you may assume, at the club but in a communal shower surrounded by other men. And since I shared that bit I should probably reassure you (cause I know it’s a no no for some readers) that while Pyotr may like others watching, at no point is anyone else allowed to touch.
I should also probably add that there is little BDSM in this story. Well, no, there is D/s but there is only one bondage scene at the club and that is about emotional release rather than sex.
As I already mentioned, Cliff has a younger sister who is extremely ill. I’m not going to start talking about Kimmi because I’m fairly certain I could write a whole other review just about the dynamics between Cliff, Pyotr and Kimmi. But I will say that the author has created one of the most beautiful, heart-rending brother/sister relationships I’ve ever read and there were several times when the siblings brought me to tears.
The story is as much about family love as it is about romantic love and even those readers that aren’t keen on BDSM may enjoy this one. Despite the noticeable editing issues the writing is beautiful. The author has a rather unique style I found pleasing to read. A Place For Cliff is the first book I’ve read by this author but I’ll be keeping an eye out for others.
My bad. Obviously there’s more than 189 words. I’m assuming I meant 189 pages.
Thanks for the review. I have never read anything by this author, but now I think I’ll put this on my TBR list. Sounds like a good book.
Hi Denise. I’d never even heard of this author before but I’m glad I read this. I hope you enjoy it too if you do give it a shot.
