Willem’s father never approved of his artistic talents, his choices in life, or the fact that he’s gay. When the only thing Horst leaves to his son is the family cat, Willem thinks it’s his father’s last insult from the grave. That is, until the cat starts talking to him.
Though Willem’s lost his boyfriend, his home, and his job, Kasha, who claims to be a magic cat, reassures him that all will be well. All he needs is Willem’s trust and a good pair of boots. But giving boots to a talking cat has unexpected consequences when odd events ambush Willem at every turn, such as the appearance of a handsome stranger in his arms at night.
While Willem begins to suspect Kasha’s plans might be dangerous for all involved, how can he distrust such a charming kitty in cowboy boots?
Review:
When I first started this story, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it as I found the writing style a little odd, but after the first chapter I was hooked. It’s like an amazing adult fairy tale where magic exists even if everyone isn’t really aware of it.
Willem is just an ordinary man who’s just lost his boyfriend and his apartment and his father. It’s been a rough time for him and he’s kind of stuck as to where to go from there. His dad leaves him a cat in his will and he’s baffled but it soon becomes clear that fate has stepped in to change Willem’s life.
Kasha isn’t what he appears to be and it doesn’t take long for him to reveal his true identity to Willem and for a real relationship to blossom between them.
I love how Willem never loses his simple man’s attitude. All he wants is to follow his dreams and love Kasha.
Kasha is convinced that it’s all a temporary situation and that once he helps Willem figure out his life, it will be time to move on.
The supporting characters in this book, such as Willem’s brother and the family of witches who live in town are smart, funny and engaging making the story all that much better to read.
The story is full of twists and turns and I enjoyed the explanations of the mythology in the book. It was interesting without being overwhelming.
The angst, when it comes, is heartbreaking, but the happily-ever-after is totally in line with the fairytale feel of the whole book.
A very enjoyable read over all.
