BLURB: If the rough and tumble man at Ali’s door is supposed to be his fate-ordained mate, then he has to wonder what in the Goddess’ name Fate was thinking.
Ali has always dreamed of his spirit mate, someone classy, intelligent and romantic, but the man who faints in his doorway is anything but. Kalo is loud and pushy, with hair more suited to a caveman and manners to match—all wrapped up in one big package of you’ve got to be kidding me. Besides, Ali has responsibilities as mama bear to his den of shifters and that’s where he needs to be. For Kalo, being rejected by his spirit mate won’t be life-threatening. But there’s something about Ali that intrigues him and touches his soul. He’s ready to offer his already-engaged heart with no strings attached, for a chance to change Ali’s mind.
REVIEW:
So I looked at the blurb and thought how cool would this be? The story has lots of paranormal beings and it’s about spirit mates and bonds, My Favorite!!
So, with an eager mind I started this book. All Hope and Happiness and Excitement.
Sigh.
I got something so different than what I thought. There were elements that I expected and really liked. Then there was the main character, Ali. Sigh.
Ali seemed like a pretty level -headed guy when you look at the surface, but then you get into his actions and you just want to smack him, repeatedly. I got so tired of his whiny, martyred actions that I had to put the book down, repeatedly.
See, here’s the thing, Ali is the only child of two black witches. When he was young his grandmother was killed by vampires and he’s cut himself off from feeling deep emotions. Even though he’s the “Momma Bear” to his family of misfits and he loves them. He won’t allow himself to fall in love or change the master plan/course that he’s envisioned for himself.
Kalo is this blend of vampire and wolf and he’s Ali’s spirit mate. Kalo is everything that you’d expect in a mate. He’s kind, wonderful, patient, loyal and very loving. He has a twin brother that he didn’t meet until he was 25, Mika. He’s a Rock star and even then, he’s this wonderful down to earth guy. He’s truly a good guy and he’s fighting Ali for the right to be with him.
The secondary characters were funny and in turns the emotional support that each main character needed. They were the giving and loving. They actually kept trying to help Ali see the light. They also tried to keep Kalo’s spirits up and offer encouragement when he was feeling frustrated and down. They in turns made me laugh and yet, they also made me feel like they were some of my closest friends. They kept me reading just to see what they’d do.
I really love the elements of spirit mates, bonds, paranormal romances. I love that every author tries to bring something new and different to the table. I love to see someone’s vision of what the world would be like if these beings were real. This one wasn’t bad. It was as if it was a normal, everyday thing. I really liked that. I loved how different sub-species of weres and witches and vampires could all co-exist together. Not the usual fighting that you always see. I really liked that.
Overall, I liked the book. I just really, really, really didn’t like one of the MC’s. That kept throwing me and making it hard to read. I liked every other character. Some more than others, but I liked them. I will give the author credit, Ali did redeem himself at the very end, but by then, my opinion had been set.
