When James Oberon and his construction crew arrive in Stone Trail for a simple remodeling job, he notices strange things about the town right away. Unwanted advances from his coworker, Reggie Frakes, distract James and make him struggle to focus on work and keep his temper.
As the friction between Reggie, James, and the other employees increases, James finds himself drawn to a handsome Italian restaurateur, Aaron Morelli. Their mutual attraction infuriates Reggie, and when a hunky mechanic enters the picture, Reggie’s determination to have James all to himself builds to explosive proportions.
Haunted by golden wolves and stalked by a rogue werewolf, James is unwittingly thrust into the town’s dark secrets and into the arms of Aaron, a man who makes it all worthwhile. But they must face the rogue if they want any chance of a future together.
REVIEW:
This was a different kind of story for me. I love Shifter books. I love things that will truly take me out of myself and draw me into a story. I’ve started reading books that were in a series and not known it and been pretty ok. For this book, I was pretty off my game.
This book starts with James and his crew arriving in the small town of Stone Trail for a remodeling job. The company truck is having some serious problems and it’s hot as all get out. There he sees this beautiful man and he’s kinda smitten with the way he looks. However, he’s got more important things on his plate. James and his crew get set up at a hotel and rent vehicles in order to get around.
Now, James is this really cool guy. He’s a great friend. He’s loyal and honest and he’s an awesome boss. Do your job and he lets some of the stupid stuff slide. He’s been in relationships before, but he’s not found that special person before. He sees Aaron and he’s on the hunt.
James has noticed some weird stuff about town. Eyes that flicker this unnatural blue. People talking in a weird code. The biggest thing that he’s noticed are the wolves. They’re EVERYWHERE!! But the strangest thing that he’s noticed is this creature at the ice machine and that has vandalized his hotel door. Now, James isn’t a stupid man, but he’s so confused.
Aaron has lived his entire life in Stone Trail and he even opened a restaurant there. He’s a young man who is getting the feel for owning a business in a small town. He’s also on the very edge of the werewolf society on his Momma’s side. He’s trying so very hard to keep what he knows a secret but he’s having a hard time with James. James calls to him and with all of the strange things that are happening to him. He wants to help, but he’s so very limited on what he can and should say.
This secondary characters were actually really good. I liked that even though some didn’t know exactly what was going on until the very end, they stood by James and did what they could to help and offer support. They kept the MC’s from being truly alone in all of the craziness that was going on.
I really wanted to like this book. I tried so hard, but it’s wasn’t happening. I found that James wasn’t all that sympathetic to me. I felt nothing for him, only annoyance. I get that weird stuff was happening and he needed to figure out what was going on, but he was also trying to get with Aaron at the same time. Aaron bothered me in the way that he would tell James to meet him and he’d help him and then not even answer any questions that James threw at him. I wanted to smack them both so many times that it took any enjoyment that I could have right out of the story.
What really kills me is that you know who is doing this. You know who the villain is. It really wasn’t all that hard to figure out and it was like it wasn’t possible for James or Aaron to even pick it up!! I thought to myself WTH? Being the objective person just reading the story and I figured it out and these two couldn’t even fathom it? REALLY?!
