The First Time…Spoils of War
Do you remember your first M/M book? Of course you do. So do I. Josh Lanyon’s The Ghost Wore Yellow Sockswas it for me. I snagged TGWYS while shopping for het stories when I first began reading ebooks, and OH MY GOD. I fell in love. Mad, crazy, twirling on the mountain top like a mental patient in love with M/M. I paid Josh’s mortgage that month will all the back list raiding I did. And then I paidthe mortgages for quite a few more M/M authors. ZAM. K.A Mitchell. Ava March and Amber Kell.I read and read and read. I don’t think I slept more than snatches for three months solid.I’m not sure I blinked.
Nobody ever accused me of being a genius—It didn’t occur to me that I might be able to write M/M until quite a while later.Me? Write a gay romance? But-but-but I’d been writing het for years! Once I decided to give it a try, though, woo boy, look out. I burned through that story like a bolt of lightning. After years of slogging through m/f manuscripts, I found my groove. Slogging? Micah dragged me along on his journey at a careening sprint. I didn’t want to sleep or eat. I needed to get Micah and Eli to the end, where they’d be together, safe, and happy.I was enthralled. Enchanted.
I fell in love with M/M all over again.
Spoils of War was that first, magical M/M journey for me. When the first edition released in 2010, Ihad a lot to learn about my craft and the business, but I also knew I was where I belonged. M/M satisfied and challenged me, all at once. Micah and Eli weren’t just characters in a story, fleeing to freedom in Herra. They were beloved guides who helped me finally find my home.
To celebrate the re-issue of my first M/M book, I’m giving away an ebook copy of Spoils of War as well as Spoils’ sequel, Plunder. Leave a comment with the title of YOUR first M/M book and your email to be entered for a random drawing for both Spoils of War and Plunder!

Blurb:
Enslaved during the invasion of the rival King of Herra, Micah cut off his emotions and adapted to his new life in servitude. Xerxes, the Herran King, abuses his captive to keep the neighboring kingdom of Alekia under his yoke, but after Micah nearly dies when plague sweeps Herra, the Alekian King sends Eli to bring his beloved son home. Conditioned by his slavery, unable to cope with his freedom, Micah seeks to please the new master he’s found in Eli throughout their harrowing journey to a homeland he no longer remembers. Eli protects the young man and introduces Micah to the pleasures denied him as a prisoner.
Will Micah accept his noble birthright when they reach Alekia, and more importantly, can he accept Eli as the devoted slave his father has given him rather than the master he’s come to love?
Note: This book was previous released under the same title by another publisher. It has been re-edited and revised in this version.

although not “technically” a M/M book, Travis by Nicole Edwards was the book that first introduced me to M/M….and I couldn’t get enough of it after that!
That first paragraph gave me a good chuckle….it describes me to a t after I stumbled across J.L. Langley’s The Tin Star just over a year ago.
Thanks for the giveaway, sounds like I have to check out more of your books.
Gosh, the very first (FF for several fandoms not counting), I think it has been Andrew Grey – Love means…No shame.
Thanks for the giveaway, I guess my to-read-list just got a bit longer!
I love your writing Kari. You have definitely found your niche. My first M/M was Hot Head by Damon Suede and never looked back! Thanks for the giveaway!

I love Hot Heads! Dante and Griff! HOT HOT HOT!
My first MM book was actually The Lord Won’t Mind by Gordon Merrick and I read it when I was 12 and it had been out for years by then but then I always read beyond my age. I got back into the genre about 2 years ago and that was Fatal Shadows by Josh Lanyon. aahickmanathotmaildotcom Thank you for the giveaway!
I actually became interested in M/M romance after reading the Lorelei James book Long Hard Ride. Two of the secondary characters, Trevor and Edgar, caught my attention. I soon discovered M/M books by KA Mitchell, Ally Blue,JL Langley, ZA Maxfield, and Jamie Craig. That was in 2009 and I haven’t stopped since. 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway!
My first m/m book was Maurice by EM Forester. Thanks for the giveaway!
My first M/M book was The Heart of Texas by R.J. Scott and I haven’t bought a het book since!

Like everyone else, I first noticed M/M while reading a M/F or MMF book and said wait a minute I like what they are doing w/o the F!
My first taste was this great novella by Jenna Rose Ellis called The Lord’s lover.
Haven’t looked back since
My first M/M experience was Kate Douglas’s Wolf Tales. I found myself so into the scenes between the guys, that I nearly ignored the rest of the book! I read a lot of free fics online after that before I finally bought my first “official” M/M romance. But I was hooked right from the start.

My first M/M experience was when I read Anne Rice’s Beauty series…..I was in college and was a little ashamed about liking the M/M parts better than the HET. I was closeted until last year when I got back into it again…. hehe.

I was intrigued with m/m books after getting hooked on Jules in Suz Brockmann’s Seal/Troubleshooter books especially after All Through the Night – Jules & Robin’s book. My first m/m book was the angst filled epic novel A Red Tainted Silence by Carolyn Gray and I have not looked back since.
Oops – here’s my email lgrant1@san.rr.com
I love S.B. books and Robin is great! Jules is so patient w/him! The wedding novella was brilliant! It actually made me mad when ppl started saying how JR Ward and her M/M book was going to be the break through for M/M writer’s in the main stream because she will be the first! I kept saying what about Jules! and SB! She’s been doing it for years!
And then luckily Ward’s bk sucked 😉 (or I thought it did)
I honestly don’t remember my first m/m book. I do remember Suzanne Brockman’s Jules and Robin story line as one of the first.
‘Slave Boy’ by Evangeline Anderson. It really helped break me out of my shell because it made me realize I wasn’t the only one interested in M/M literature.
And, just want to let you know, ‘Spoils of War’ is one of my favorites!! I read it about a year ago and fell in love.
I think I first discovered MM through checking for cheap reads on the now defunct Books on Board and came up with Jo Myles’s Pole Star and Christina Jade Loren’s Break and Enter, and now whilst I read anything really, it is mostly MM stories!
The first official m/m book I read was probably BETWEEN SINNERS AND SAINTS by Marie Sexton.
I just spent 15 minutes trying to track my progress on goodreads, but I think I was gunshy to record them initially. So I am going with ‘Something Like Summer’ by Jay Bell. (I read a lot of YA, mainstream and otherwise)
ps love your work!
My first MM had to be the first Adrien English story by Josh Lanyon.
Although not really M/M, my first exposure was Lynn Flewellings Nightrunner series. Because I bought the second book on Amazon I started getting Amazon recommendations for Josh Lanyons Death Of A Pirate King. I’d never bought an e-book before so it took me a while but I finally started with an anthology that included Josh’s Cards On The Table (I wasn’t sure if I would like his writing so I thought it would be better to try multiple authors in one book). Of course I liked Josh’s book enough to search out every one he had written-those were the good old days. 🙂

My first official M/M (not yaoi novel or fanfic) was A Change of Heart by Mary Calmes before that I never even considered reading M/M fiction. Yaoi and yaoi novels just did it for me and I remember six years ago I kind of just scoffed at M/M fiction when it started becoming popular (er..maybe this was all in my mind..it trying to compete with yaoi, lol). But after giving it a try I found that it was not what I expected at all. It was well written and actually very riveting.

I honestly do wish I could remember my first M/M book, but I think it was some freebie I found on barnes & noble, and I got all that I could find. I’ll tell you that the first one I bought was Damon Suede’s Hot Head, and it remains my favorite, even while I’ve just love, love, love other books. So glad you found your way to writing something you love, Kari! Thanks for sharing with us.
