TITLE: Among The Living
SERIES: PsyCop #1
AUTHOR: Jordan Castillo Price
LENGTH: 89 pages
BLURB: Victor Bayne, the psychic half of a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who’s more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves.
He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or “Stiff”) from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner’s retirement party and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness’ idea of the world’s hottest guy.
Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer’s not leaving any spirits behind.
REVIEW:
If are you are looking for a new series to get addictive from this might be the one for you. An enjoyable short paranormal story.
Victor Bayne is a cop and psychic who can hear and talk to dead people. He is traumatized to what he had gone through in Camp Hell, (A training camp for psychics) so he uses a special drug called Auracel to numb this sixth sense so he can shut the dead and their voices.During the retirement party for his ex-partnerhe then met Jacob Marks, a non-psychic cop, an encounter (which I find really hot)that lead to something more.
So when a killer surfaced and Vic’s new partner Lisa was suspended, Vic, Jacob and Jacob’s partner, Carolyn was teamed up to solve the mystery of the murder.
I find the story really unique. Jordan Castillo Price crafted this book well because sometimes building a new world for your reader, and it is paranormal is like walking in a thin sheet of ice. It’s a great risk. That’s what most books like this will likely to encounter and for a non-paranormal book readers or new to the genre, it’s should be interesting enough for them to continue reading, and Miss Price totally nailed it.
The chemistry between the main characters is sparkly hot. I can’t deny that. I find Vic’s character funny and charming, broken but charming. While Jacob totally topped the list of the best boyfriend material. Tall, muscular and handsome. I find it adoring him being smitten to Vic.The story told in Vic’s point of view but we get to assess Jacob’s character on our own. You’ll fall in love with him. Likable sub-characters too, especially Lisa. She gives off this vibe that you’ll want her to be around.
This book is fast paced, enjoyable and suspenseful. I don’t know about others who had read this but there were scenes that totally creepy. And that’s a good thing for me. I really should have kicked myself for waiting this long to read this. It is well written, really engaging. I never once found myself bored reading this book.
When you really enjoyed a book you’ll complain that it is really short, but the good side of this, it will make read the next book in the series and will be looking forward for more and this book is sure as hell a nice way to start the series.
