TITLE: Kai for Christmas
AUTHOR: E.T. Malinowski
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 56 Pages
BLURB: Kai O’Donnell hates Christmas. It’s not the blaring commercialism or the too-perky people. Being an interior designer, Kai can handle most people. But during Christmas, he has to deal with a man who gets under his skin like no other: Cade. Handsome—hand-me-a-towel-because-I’m-drooling-sexy—sarcastic Cade.
Cade Randall has been in love with Kai O’Donnell since setting eyes on the auburn-haired Native American. Falling back on his teenage habits, Cade picks on Kai every time they’re together. He wants Kai under his Christmas tree in nothing but a big red bow, his to keep forever, but Cade’s shenanigans may ruin something beautiful in the making.
REVIEW:
The time-honored tradition of a boy pulling his crushes pig-tails sets the tone for this cute story. Cade is madly in love with his best friend’s brother and has been for years. Convinced that Kai is straight, he can’t seem to stop himself from compulsively tormenting the object of his desire in an effort to get even a little bit of attention.
Kai is smart and talented but has his own insecurity issues. Cade’s constant teasing makes it hard for him to enjoy the holidays and his time with his family.
These two men are so bluntly oblivious you can’t help but laugh when they find themselves unknowingly on opposite sides of the same feelings.
I really enjoyed watching them slowly find their way together, starting with a startling revelation for both of them at a club. I winced at a few of the stinging insults from both of them but consoled myself with the fact that both men immediately regretted them every time.
The only complaint I have is a familiar one with short stories. I wish it was longer so that the anticipation had more time to build. It always feels like such a letdown when everything seems to be solved so easily when we know in reality that it’s just never that quick.
However, the characters are immediately likable, the family dynamics real and wonderful and the sex was sweet and hot. The ending was my favorite kind of HEA.
