SERIES: Province Town #3
AUTHOR: Jacob Z Flores
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 240 Pages
BLURB:
As vain as he is beautiful, Nino Santos happily lives life waiting for the next ferry full of fairies to bring him new conquests. As long as they aren’t hirsute, he’s all in. So he’s shocked to wake up after a beach party he cannot remember with a hairy naked man lying next to him.
Teddy Miller doesn’t remember the “Bear Week” party either, much less the Abercrombie & Fitch model wannabe next to him. Teddy doesn’t give two cents about appearances, but guys like Abercrombie don’t return the favor. That’s why he prefers men with extra fur and padding over carbon copy clones of perfection—a type of man Teddy is far too familiar with.
When Nino and Teddy glimpse each other the next morning, it’s loathing at first sight. Instead of exchanging phone numbers, they exchange insults and vow never to see each other again. In Provincetown, however, escaping a trick best forgotten isn’t easy. Mutual friends and chance circumstances keep Nino and Teddy in each other’s orbit. But are they fighting each other or the attraction growing between them? The answer lies amid Provincetown’s windswept dunes and the night neither of them can recall.
REVIEW:
With this new release from Jacob Z. Flores we traveled back to Provincetown, this time in the middle of Bear Week.
We catch up with Nino, the best friend of Van, and we get to learn about his life is and how he chooses to live it. Nino lives by certain rules that have brought him to where and what he is now, a stunning looking male model.
He’s more than surprised when he finds himself waking up next to the least likely man he can think of. Not his normal fuck and run type of guy – smooth, young sexy – but a bear of a man who’s a little overweight.
Teddy is in the same state he is just as horrified as Nino waking up next to the man in question. With a love treasured (and idolized probably) in his head for more then 10 years, Teddy doesn’t want to think of what happened that has gotten both of them to where they are now. After he lost Brody he decided that his type needed to change.
So how did he end up with Nino, a man who is smooth, sexy and hot?
Slowly we get introduced to both their lives, catch up with familiar characters from former stories and we see that Nino and Teddy seem to kind of keep getting pulled towards each other.
Special mention should go to Jay, a bear and new friend extraordinaire, and in a way he starts the process of Nino seeing things in a different way.
And we meet Irene, who’s the best friend of Teddy, someone struggling with her own problems. Or perhaps I should say she’s struggling with her identity and making advances on every gay man that comes around.
When Nino and Teddy keep bumping into each other as they share similarities in the opinion of their group of friends, their friends see what they themselves refuse to see. Brody ending up in Provincetown and entering the picture doesn’t help, obviously.
Both main characters realizing what happened “that night” and the events prior to them waking up together and it opens both their eyes, each in their own way.
Teddy is a character you can instantly love. He’s friendly, open, kind and a good friend but the fact that he’s still pining for his “lost” young love makes him decided that he can’t be with anyone who’s like Brody, the boy he lost. Nino seems to be the one that has to fight for the love of the reader. He’s hard to like, arrogant, harsh and not a good friend. Still, if you look behind that appearance you know there’s more to his story.
You could see that as a point of criticism, the way the author formed these two main characters. I won’t be the judge but I do wanted to point it out.
The town that author Jacob Z. Flores created is lovable, honest, confronting and yet so special. The characters are different yet so familiar to each other and to the reader.
I will not give away too much but the end meets every hopeful expectation. It’s sizzling hot, adorable, loving, sweet and has very nice extra parts that add to the general story.
I have to say Jacob Flores seems to be growing along with this series, making you want to read more and connecting you with this town and the people living there. I personally look forward to the next part.
For me this series became a must read, to the point that when I start reading I want to finish it .
