TITLE: Old Loyalty, New Love
AUTHOR: Mary Calmes
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 246 Pages
BLURB: When jackal shifter Quade Danas was banished from his pack for being gay, he spent years in the military escaping his father’s prejudice before returning to civilian life as a bodyguard for Roman Howell, the teenage son of a very rich man. After Roman is in an accident that leaves him physically scarred and emotionally distant, Quade is the only one who can get through to him. As Roman becomes a man, he realizes what he wants—his bodyguard by his side and in his bed. Unfortunately, Quade can’t seem to see past the kid Roman once was to the man he has become, certain Roman’s feelings are merely misplaced gratitude. But Roman knows a lot more than Quade realizes, and he’s used to persevering, no matter how many impediments life throws his way. He wants the chance to prove to Quade that he’s strong enough for a jackal alpha to call mate.
Despite the decades Quade has been away, and the heartache of his father’s rejection, his inborn loyalty to the pack remains, and his abrupt departure left the jackal shifters without an alpha heir. As a psychopath shifter staking claim as alpha draws Quade back home, and Quade feels compelled to heed the call, he may be forced to make a choice he never anticipated. But doing so means he must leave Roman behind… unless somehow they find a way to make loyalty and love work together
REVIEW:
FANTASTIC! Miss Calmes did it again! What an amazing shifting story and so much promise there for more….
I cannot deny the minute I heard that this author was releasing a new book I was excited, it is a fair thing to say that her reputation precedes her! So when I had the opportunity to do a pre-release review for this one I was thrilled to say the least yet also a bit nervous. I mean a new shifter story after ”Change of Heart”, perhaps my favorite book ever, what would I think of this one…
In the beginning it took me a bit to get into the story and into the characters especially Quade. But you cannot help falling in love with Roman from the moment you get introduced to him.
Hearing his story makes you feel breathless and yearn to hold him to give him comfort and support. Miss Calmes takes her time to built this story from scratch. You get an extended introduction to both main characters throughout the first part of the story.
The building of the relationship between Roman and Quade or should I say the confirmation of their relationship is beautifully written and the sensualness and sexiness is very present.
Where the story picks up is in the second part where we as readers get to know more of Quade and his background. We find out about his childhood years and home, his family and former friends including meeting his former best friend Dell and his former lover, Novan.
Three characters that are also very worth exploring in my opinion are introduced as Quade’s self-appointed guards Tucker and Garrett and Roman’s safety advisor, Arman.
When Quade is called to help, he needs to deal with the emotions of being back “home”. He learns that although he is the alpha he doesn’t need to do this alone, he also is allowed to trust and lean on someone.
Thankfully Roman is one step ahead on these things and stands by his side when he deals with his past for one final time. (without wanting to say too much).
At the end I want to express my delight about this new story and that I sincerely hope that Mary Calmes will be continuing this as a series. I cannot wait to read more of all the characters that were introduced to us in this “first” story.
