TITLE: The Current Between Us
AUTHOR: Kindle Alexander
LENGTH: 320 pages
BLURB: Gage Synclair, international, hard-hitting investigative photojournalist, is preparing for the final special report of his career…a story of deception and murder six long years in the making. And after ten years in some of the worst parts of the world, he’s ready to settle life down and open an art gallery in his hometown of Chicago. The only thing getting in his way, he needs to find a competent electrician to finish the job before his grand opening.
Trent Cooper, electrical contractor, is surprised by the last minute request for a fast-paced electrical remodel, wanting nothing more than to get his foot in the door with Layne Construction. Being gay in the construction industry isn’t easy, nor is being father to his two young adopted children. Trent keeps his life in separate zones to avoid a short circuit. But when the gallery owner propositions him on the first day, Trent can’t help but think his worlds are a little too close for comfort.
Will their high-voltage passion spark everlasting love or will their lives break the circuit between them forever?
REVIEW:
Kindle Alexander consistently writes solid romances that really give you something to sink your teeth into. Though this is only my second read, I really enjoy a story that you have to invest a little time into. While there were a few things present here that I don’t generally like, such as insta-love and a heavy focus on children to name a few, I didn’t seem to mind them all that much in the long run.
This story begins with investigative journalist, Gage, and single dad electrician, Trent, meeting when Trent wins the bid to work on Gage’s new gallery. There is immediate attraction on both sides, but Trent is adamant about keeping things professional. He has custody of his deceased sister’s two children and has all but given up with any relationships to keep the different parts of his life separated.
Gage is the total opposite of Trent. He is a wealthy celebrity and world traveler who goes after what he wants, and that includes Trent. His persistence eventually pays off, as Trent slowly lets Gage past the walls he has in place to protect his family. Until that point, however, things were a bit repetitive as their attraction was described many times. Gage has a habit of constantly using terms of endearment when speaking with Trent, which got a bit tedious, but, once the guys get past the lustful stage and the relationship actually begins to take hold, it is worth the wait.
At the same time, there is also a side plot going on involving Gage’s final hurrah, his final investigative report, which he has been working on for years. I have to say that I honestly didn’t care too much about this, but it plays a bigger role towards the end.
There are some great side characters, including the kids’ Auntie Crazy and their nanny, Rhonny. Gage’s family was pretty cool too. The kids were great as well, and aside from the constant “daddy this, daddy that” prevalent throughout, I thought they were really cute and amusing.
It seems there are many things here that I didn’t like, but the overall story was a solid 4 for me. I liked these guys together and loved how they made their different worlds mesh. This was a really sweet romance with a bit of heat, excitement and intrigue thrown in, and I’d recommend it for those looking a sweet, heartbreaking, exciting and hot romance.
