TITLE: Wolf Hunter
AUTHOR: Ryan Loveless
PUBLISHER: TVB Publishing
LENGTH: 210 pages
BLURB: After fruitless years hunting the werewolf that slaughtered his family, Jaylen DeWallis finally has him cornered in a tiny midwestern town. However, Denton isn’t an average alpha werewolf. He’s the Alpha. His very presence drives docile werewolves into a frenzy. Denton’s first directive to the town’s brainwashed wolves is simple: Kill the hunter. With stale, canine breath blowing hot on his neck, the last thing Jaylen needs is to meet an easygoing, sweet, and normal guy who can make him want to let his guard down.
The moment Westley stumbles over his big feet into Jaylen, he’s drawn to Jaylen’s confidence and understated humor. But before he can make plans for breakfast in bed, never mind happily ever after, he learns his pack has put a target on Jaylen’s head. As the full moon nears, Westley comes up with a last-ditch plan to save everyone—Jaylen included. However, when that plan involves revealing he’s a werewolf to Jaylen, it’s his own life Westley needs to save.
REVIEW:
This was a pretty interesting change of pace for a paranormal/werewolf story. I always enjoy seeing something a bit different than the norm, and this certainly had that. It’s a bit darker and much more violent than what most are probably used to, as Jaylen is basically on a werewolf killing spree as he follows the trail of Denton, the wolf who slaughtered his family. Jaylen has been using a mix of magical enhanced herbs that allow him to sense the wolves from the humans.
When he gets to town, he meets Westley, an Omega wolf who uses a mixture of herbs that prevent him from shifting, thus remaining human and undetected by Jaylen. At the same time, Denton has come to town and is using his brainwashing powers as the Alpha to send the other wolves to hunt Jaylen. Not believing the Jaylen he met could be the killer Denton accuses, and feeling Jaylen must have some justification, he goes against the pack to protect Jaylen as the pack hunts him.
Westley’s best friend becomes the new pack alpha and stands by him, helping to save Jaylen after he is captured by the pack. Jaylen teams up with the pack to fight and kill Denton, but it has some very altering results.
Now, it is difficult to say much here without giving things away. However, this does turn into somewhat of a ménage, though not in the normal sense. Yes, there is a ménage relationship, but there are extenuating circumstances, and all three are never together at the same time sexually. Westley and one partner are only able to have sex in wolf form, so there is that aspect as well. Westley and the other partner are only ever together as humans. Most of the sex at this point takes place off the page without many details being given.
So, this was a bit different in more ways than one. But, the story was quite gripping and exciting, and I found it quite enjoyable. I wish we had been shown how things turned out a bit further into the future than it did and wouldn’t mind reading another story in this world.
