AUTHOR: Kindle Alexander
LENGTH: 275 pages
BLURB: Up and coming football hero, Colton Michaels, makes a Hail Mary pass one night in the college locker room that results in the hottest, sexiest five days of his young life. However, interference after the play has him hiding his past and burying his future in the bottom of a bottle. While Colt seems to have it all, looks can be deceiving, especially when you’re trapped so far in a closet that you can’t see your way out. When ten years of living his expected fast-lane lifestyle lands him engaged to his manipulative Russian supermodel girlfriend, he decides it’s time to call a new play.
Jace Montgomery single-handily built the largest all-star cheerleading gym in the world, driven by a need to forget a life-altering encounter with a handsome quarterback a decade ago. His reputation as an excellent coach, hard-nosed business man, and savvy entrepreneur earned him respect in the sometimes catty world of competitive cheerleading. When Jace learns of his ex-lover’s plans to marry, his heart executes a barrel roll and his carefully-placed resolve tumbles down without a mat to absorb the shock. Can his island escape help him to finally let go of the past and move his life forward?
REVIEW:
Holy hotness prologue opener! Colt and Jace in the locker room, hot and heavy. Better have your own towels ready for that one.
When, this story begins, Colt, who is deeply in the closet during his college football years, makes his play for star cheerleader, Jace. Colt convinces Jace to go to Hawaii with him where they spend 5 magical days being together. I had extremely mixed feelings at this point. Just knowing how deeply closeted Colt was and what the chances were he would be able to even take a peek outside during the highlight of his career being drafted into the NFL, put a very sour taste in my mouth. Even giving how sincere Colt came across, and he was very convincing in Hawaii, I still had trouble getting this out of my head. So did Jace at first, but he gives in and falls under Colt’s fantasy spell.
Then, they return home and back to reality. Colt is happier than he has ever been now that he feels he has his future planned and Jace by his side. However, his father and manager have other ideas. His bastard of a father has molded Colt’s life since he was a kid, pushing him to be the star he is today. So, he isn’t going to let something like his son being gay get in the way of his plans. Unfortunately, he is horrible enough and convincing enough that Colt gives in to the pressure and drops Jace like a hot tater.
Fast forward ten years long years, throughout which Colt has been miserable and gotten by in a basically drunk stupor, now with a bitchy, manipulative, drug-addicted woman, whom he is being pressured to marry. She is beyond ridiculously horrible, but thankfully, Colt mans up and takes control of his life in what seems to be the nick of time.
Jace, in the meantime, has become quite successful running his own gym/training center for cheerleaders. Colt finds his way back to Jace, and they seem to pick things up where they left off. Jace seemed to give in a little too easily after ten years of heartache, but again, Colt’s sincerity shines through, and it is difficult not to feel for him.
Just when you think things might finally be getting on track for these guys, they are dealt another blow. While this is a bad thing, good things do come from it. For starters, the love between Colt and Jace is stronger than ever. For another, we are introduced to Mitch, the son of Colt’s team doctor, who helps them with security/investigation issues. I am really hoping Mitch gets his own story, because he is very interesting character, funny and sexy and even a bit mysterious.
Jace and Colt get their happy ending, and after the road they have had to travel, it is more than well deserved. Things seemed to wrap up a bit too easily with Colt’s dad and ex-fiance, and there were times that things were a bit unbelievable. Yet, I ended up really enjoying this story and was fully behind the relationship. This was my first time reading this author, and now I’m really looking forward to her other books that I have lined up on my Kindle.
