TITLE: Born This Way
AUTHOR: Poppy Dennison
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
BLURB: Dayton Whitmore injures his arm playing basketball with his lion-shifter friends, and his best friend asks Dayton to check on her estranged brother Hart while he’s in Atlanta visiting a specialist. Though Dayton and Hart were never close, he grudgingly agrees.
Banishment from his pride meant Hart Sherman could never see his family again. His liger heritage—a tiger mother and lion father—was a thorn in his alpha father’s side. He always planned to go back for Dayton, the man he knows is his mate, but he uses his career as an entertainment attorney as an excuse to avoid risking Dayton’s rejection. When Dayton shows up unannounced on his doorstep, Hart wants nothing more than to claim him.
Knowing what it means to be a lion’s mate, Dayton isn’t in any hurry to make a lifetime commitment. To convince Dayton he’s serious, Hart must come to terms with the circumstances of his birth—and find a place in the pride for them both.
REVIEW:
In Born This Way we find main characters Dayton and Hart. Hart is a Liger (a cross between a lion and a tiger) and is the result of a mishap in his motherland. It is the reason why he has been kicked out of his pack.
The same pack has adopted and nurtured a human child named Dayton within their pack as one of their own. Being the son of the alpha and not being a full-blooded, Hart was banned from his pride whereas Dayton grows up among them and finds a best friend in Hart’s sister Tawny and gets an impression that maybe Hart despised him, not knowing exactly why.
Feeling the pull of a mate, Hart decides that it has been enough and starts to pursuit Dayton. Slowly they develop a relationship and Dayton learns the real reason of Harts his crude behaviour as it was the mate-pull that Hart felt earlier on and tried to ignore because of age and family trouble.
They run into a roadblock when Hart’s father and Alpha of the pack wants to put a halt to their blossoming relationship. Being threatened and endangered by a pack member combined with an unexpected heat, it dissolves in taking the final step into their relationship and securing their future together.
This is a simple shifter-loving story that I personally enjoyed reading yet there comes also the critic that I have towards it. The story is short and easy to read but I felt there was some unexplored territory left there. And with the bonus of really feeling a connection to these characters it is a shame and a bit of a loss that there isn’t more depth and character-exploration done in this story.
That being said I think this is a great story for readers who like a shifter tale combined with a contemporary romance.
Reading about the side characters also makes me speak out that I hope Miss Dennison will continue writing more in this universe as I personally (and I dare assume readers of this story too) would love to see Kyle’s story and even Tawny’s happiness which I would like to read in the next instalment.
A good 3.5 stars for me and the wish of seeing it continued.
