Review by Sid Love
TITLE: Pup (Book #1)
SERIES: Guards of Folsom
AUTHOR: SJD Peterson
BLURB: Micah “Pup” Slayde knows he wants Tackett Austin the moment he lays eyes on him in the Guards of Folsom. Micah wants to have purpose, to be taken care of, and to take care of his Dom—wants to trust him completely, live for him, belong to him. To become his everything. Micah is sure Tackett is the one. The problem is, in order to be the perfect sub, he needs to stay focused, and that’s not easy for Micah, who suffers from what he refers to as a “broken brain.” Focus and adult attention deficit disorder rarely coexist.
Ever since Ty Callahan and Blake Henderson’s collaring ceremony, Tackett’s been thinking too much about his own loneliness. Even though Ty introduces Micah and urges Tackett to give him a try, Tackett isn’t so easily convinced. He’s spent his life pursuing a successful business career, and the subs he dominates almost never enjoy the kiss of his leather twice. Twenty years Micah’s senior, Tackett has no interest in taking on and taming such a young and naughty sub—but it’s difficult to resist such an adorable pup when he begs.
REVIEW:
This story from the very beginning till the end was quite interesting. Switching point of views between the two main characters – Tackett and Micah – the author grasped my attention instantly when she introduces Micah – the cocky sub who needs a lot more than just a dominating master to set him straight. The title “Pup” fits well as this story is all about Micah and his journey to become an ideal sub for one person he yearns to be with.
Tackett.
He is a guy, much older than Micah is (and I guess, this makes the story all the more sexier ha!) and he is troubled about his growing age. It is almost funny how he pities himself for being so lonely even when he has everything else -lots of money, retired life, a lavish home, an expensive car.. you name it! But what he doesn’t have is someone to share it with. He has almost lost hope in finding that someone special who could fulfil his needs and desires.
It is more ironic that Micah tries so hard to tempt him and a stubborn Tackett doesn’t even give him a second look… at first! But then things get heated up during a party and Tackett suddenly realizes how badly he wants this gorgeous pup. And he doesn’t just wants him… he wants Micah for himself! Though there are doubts in his mind, knowing exactly that inviting a naughty sub like Micah into his life and is not going to be easy. Yet, the pup is given a two week’s time to prove himself worthy of being able to permanently finding a place in Tackett’s life. These two weeks would surely prove to be the turning point of their relationship, but could a cocky Micah be what it takes to please Tackett?
The writing of the author is brilliant in this book. I have enjoyed every single scene crafted in it, may it have been a Tackett’s POV or Micah’s. The turmoil in the mind of Tackett about whether or nothe had made the right call by taking in Micah or the emotional mess in which Micah would be, after fucking up his chance while trying to please his master was all captured perfectly! The little things she has written, especially in relation to Micah, like he would make use of the band around his wrist to snap it and get his focus back, would make anyone sympathize with the boy. It goes without saying that he is the character that I enjoyed reading about the most, although I did like seeing him from Tackett’s eyes too, which was this hot image of a gorgeous young boy with a killer body (shudders). Oh and did I forget to mention – the hot, steamy, mouth-watering sex scenes! You would be left craving for more once you read it. The most intense one I believe was when Tackett decides to bottom, which was not only exciting as an idea but also it was fascinating how well it goes. I don’t know why but I was almost worried Micah was going to do something stupid and lose the opportunity. Thank God, there wasn’t any drama there because I sure as hell would have died of fictional-sex-deprivation (yep, I just made that up.)
There were issues I had with this story, and I would direct them all towards one character – Mr. Tackett Austin. I can understand the need to tame his sub to get rid of most of his cockiness, but being so harsh on him just because he couldn’t focus? That wasn’t fair! I hated Tackett in one part especially where he takes Micah out to test him and then punishes him for things that were simply human reflexes. Okay I know a Dom/Sub relationship is different, it is all about who is in control. But like Tackett says, a good Dom will always take care of the needs of his sub. Micah has special needs and his attention deficit disorder requires not punishment but love and care.
Till about eighty five percent of the story, I felt Tackett was this cold, emotionless bastard who cared only for himself and his own needs. And then the scene at the park happened – Tackett holding hands with Micah, kissing him in public, touching, caressing him and talking to him like he actually mattered. It melted my heart, and the epilogue was just what I needed to warm me up to him. I won’t spoil it for you (although, I am afraid I have already spoiled too much lol), but the epilogue is worth reading.
Pup is enjoyable – a page turner, with some funny moments that has you laughing hard; it is also sexy as hell and someone who is especially a lover of BDSM genred book, shouldn’t miss it!

I own all of Jo’s books (just bought Tuck & Cover yesterday), so, I guess the only thing I don’t have would be the story in the Crack the Darkest Sky Wide Open anthology. So, if I won, it’d be great to get that in epub.
Thanks for all the great stories, Jo. I truly love your storytelling.
