N’awlins Exotica: Taking Erotica to Another Level
Sharita Lira
Thanks to Sid for allowing me in today to talk about my newest series, N’awlins Exotica. With all authors, I believe they have a favorite book or series that has a special place in their hearts. Not saying I don’t love all my books but the N’awlins series is definitely one of the highlights of my short writing career.
In this series, I’m tapping into taboos while taking readers through the lovely city of New Orleans. Why NOLA? Well, I adore the city, its rich tradition, the diversity, and the architecture is very inspiring. I’ve visited New Orleans three times and I hope to go back again this year around Halloween. Why you ask? Because every time I travel to Louisiana I get a little bit more inspiration.
This past February, I went to Mardi Gras to enjoy the festivities of the one of the biggest celebrations in the world. We attended several parades, gathered plenty of beads, but more importantly for me, I found more things to inspire future stories.
When I went, I LikeEm Pretty was in edits so much of what I’d wanted to write was already in the story. However, for the next book and those thereafter I plan to hash out more of what I observed, showing you the beautiful place that inspired my series.
Of course, the back drop, the N’awlins Exotica Entertainment complex is not real but it’s a place in my head that seems to fit the character of New Orleans. Everyone’s heard the stories of NOLA. You can drink on the streets; people are a lot more loose and free et cetera. Then there’s the food, the atmosphere of a big party that happens all throughout the year, not just in February. New Orleans has so much to offer to its residents and tourists and I hope as I get deeper into this series, I want to bring more of that out in the collection.
Besides that, there’s a sexy undertone to New Orleans. The music, culture, the art is what keeps people coming back. Seemingly artists who want to be inspired flock to New Orleans to find something to write, paint, and or sing about. For me it was the raw sexuality coupled by the gritty reality that is New Orleans. No violence isn’t sexy but it unfortunately it happens in leaps and bounds in the city of New Orleans.
On the other side, there’s also plenty of magic and fascination with the paranormal. As you may or may not know, stories of vampires and witches rule this town with many of its inhabitants convinced of some of the old tales that many haven’t believed. In N’awlinsExoitica Paranormal, I tap into that as well with my twins Ryland and Ryder, 300 year old vampires who are trying to survive in the modern world. At this point all they have is each other but eventually, they’ll make it into the N’awlins Exotica series. How? You’ll have to keep watch to find out.
During this series, I hope to entertain readers with some erotic romance and the gritty reality that is New Orleans. By splicing in a little bit about the traditions, the atmosphere, as well as the magic, I’m aiming to paint a picture that makes people who haven’t traveled there, curious about the city of NOLA.
In my view there’s something sexy about New Orleans. Perhaps it’s the underlying seediness, the magic, or maybe the stories that keep me going back. In N’awlins Exotica, I’m hoping to show you what inspires me and draws me to the Big Easy.
Overall Series Blurb
The N’awlins Exotica/Paranormal series
The city of New Orleans is rich in tradition, diverse, and known for the inspiration it provides. In the “Big Easy” there lies the hunger for the erotic as well as the unknown. The residents here feel that sexual energy and it reveals itself through their various creative activities.
Join the characters as they take a wild ride on the edge, enjoying their town for all it has to offer. There’s a certain magic in the air, an erotic magic that cannot be ignored.
I Like Em Pretty Book Blurb
New Orleans is supposed to be the big easy. One night changes everything for Frankie Choteau.
New Orleans. A city rich in tradition, diversity, and on the comeback trail from hurricane Katrina. Francois “Frankie” Choteau, a resident of this town, a cop with a hot temper and low tolerance for bs. Kajika Fortier, a transplant from Oklahoma came here looking for a dream and unfortunately it’s turned into a nightmare. On a hot summer night, they meet and cross paths during a very difficult situation. Despite this, the attraction between them is evident and loneliness for both men is a fate worse than death. They’d both like a chance at happiness but will the circumstances and Frankie’s uneasiness prevent their happy ever after?

BIO: Michael Mandrake pens complex characters who are already comfortable in their sexuality. Thorough these characters, he builds worlds not centered on erotica but rather the mainstream plots we might encounter in everyday life through personal experiences or the media. I’ve never been, but since I’ve read so many books set there, I feel like I have been. On my brother’s first trip out there, he was, as you say, so inspired by the city. His art is photography, and the pictures he took were amazing, once again making me feel like I had visited. Maybe one day, but yes, always again in books.
Thanks so much for sharing with us, Sharita!
Thank you for all the lovely comments! And thanks to Sid and Staff for having me!
