Character Interview: Jazz Spencer of the Phoenix – Series
Hey everyone, thanks for dropping in today! My name is Sage Marlowe and I’m Sid’s guest today. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a multi-published author of gay erotic romance and addicted to books, coffee and chocolate – although I guess the term author kinda implies that, right? Anyway, I thought I’d do something new for today’s visit: I have tracked down one of my characters and interviewed him. The choice which one of my lovely guys to pick was relatively easy, especially since I asked him the same questions I give the guests on my blog. (He’s also one of my biggest author crushes, but please don’t tell him that!)
Ladies & Gentlemen, please welcome fellow author Mr Jazz Spencer, aka JS Phoenix, from Catching a Phoenix and Keeping a Phoenix

Hi Jazz,
I’m thrilled to meet you again almost one year after final edits! Thanks for agreeing to tag along with this. Please have a drink and make yourself comfortable. Ready? Great, let’s start. Please give us a short introduction about yourself
Um, hi everyone, it’s great to be here today. I’m JS Phoenix and just like you, Sage, I’m an author of gay fiction. I grew up in a very rural part if England but I’ve moved to London a couple of years ago, where I now live with my partner Ryan, a professor of English literature, and our dog, a boisterous Lab called Dr. Pepper.
What genre(s) do you write in and why?
Oh, I just answered that, didn’t I? Um, I write gay erotic fiction because well, it’s close to home and I can relate to my characters *laughs*
Do you need a special setting to write in or do you have a ceremony to get you in the mood? What does it look like?
I have a room on the top floor of our house which is dedicated to my writing. It’s full of inspirational pictures and equipped with desk, a sofa and a stereo – everything I need to get in the mood, really. Oh, and Ryan has bought me a coffee machine for my last birthday, that’s in there now too so I don’t always have to run down three floors to get a cup.
Describe your feelings when you learnt that your first book was accepted for publication
I couldn’t believe it, mainly because my brother Algy opened the letter and read it out to me. I thought he was taking the piss. Oops, sorry. Can you delete that and replace it with “I thought he was making fun of me”? Yeah? Thanks!
Your favourite drink and food when writing
Coffee, lots of it, and I adore chocolate shortbread, so Ryan makes sure we always have plenty of both in the house
How much of the real “you” is in your stories?
Hmm. I think there are little bits of me in all of my books, but only those who really know me would be able to tell – at least that’s what I’m hoping.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who was it?
*blushes* Oh dear… That would be the usual suspects, I guess. Mr Darcy and Heathcliff. Yes, even being gay I crushed on them. But I also have a definite weak spot for your very own Noah and Caelan. Honestly, those boys are fantastic and I’d love to hang out with them.
Favourite comfort food?
I love Italian food, so any kind of pasta, really.
A person you admire
Ryan, my partner. I know it’s not easy to live with me, especially when the muse comes to visit and I’m stuck in the writing cave for days on end, but he’s very patient with me. Love you, darling!
Favourite colour?
Black
Favourite pet?
My dog, Pepper
Dog or cat?
*grins* dog
Coffee or tea?
Coffee
Quickie or candles?
Both, repeatedly
Hunky or chunky?
Oh, Ryan is very hunky
Suit & tie or jeans & boots?
Either – or neither
Walk in the park or chat over cocktails?
Walk in the park. Inside I’m still a real countryboy
Thanks so much for the interview, Jazz! I’ve loved talking to you again and you mentioning Algy just now reminded me that his story is still waiting to be written, so how about we pick him up for a night out in town? That should give me something to write about, hehe.

Here’s the question:
Who or what does the “Phoenix” in the books’ titles refer to?
======================================================================
Catching a Phoenix
Confined to rural England for a holiday, Ryan Holmes isn’t expecting the only person within a five-mile radius to be the man of his dreams. Hotheaded but introverted, Jazz Spencer, Ryan’s solitary neighbour, may look like a dream come true but has the potential to become a nightmare. Giving in to mutual attraction, they begin an affair, and Ryan finds himself increasingly intrigued. But even though they are obviously very compatible on a physical level, Jazz remains distant. His reluctance to reveal his feelings, or indeed much personal information at all, forces Ryan to make his own assumptions, which mostly turn out to be painfully wrong. Ryan soon has to realise that whenever he is about to fall in love, Jazz just shies away, leaving Ryan’s heart burned by the heat of passion. Determined that he can solve the mystery that Jazz is to him anyway, Ryan sets out to catch him for good.

Keeping a Phoenix
Catching a Phoenix was just the beginning.

He wants love but doesn’t know how to live his happy ever after now that he has found it with Ryan Holmes, who, deeply infatuated with him, would do anything for Jazz—if only he knew how to keep his precious Phoenix. Just as it seems that Ryan is finally getting somewhere with Jazz, things take a dramatic turn and Ryan finds himself brokenhearted after yet another breakup. He is certain that they will never meet again until one day, Jazz returns into his life, ready to start all over. As Ryan unveils Jazz’s secrets, he is determined not to let him escape again. Going all in, he shows Jazz exactly how much he’s wanted—with astonishing results.

~JS or Jazz Spencer is the Phoenix.
Not fair to have access to two such cool names, is it? Jazz sounds rather high maintenance. I love high maintenance characters! They are always worth the extra effort. I’d love to read either of these books, thank you!
Hehe, yes. To be honest, the reason Jazz got a pen name at all was that I couldn’t decide which name I wanted to give him. He is definitely high maintenance, but a great guy and he was fantastic to write. Good luck!
