REVIEW:
I was so excited when I saw a new book out by Kris T. Bethke and a new-to-me author, Nell Iris. I had enjoyed so much Kris’ story about a Hazelnut farmer in my native Oregon. This was a very wise choice for me.
Liam O’Donoughue is a wilderness guide for V Wilderness Adventures, a company that he owns with his four other “brothers”, Jackson, Everett, Drew and Wade. The five men know that you don’t have to be blood related to be brothers. They had forged their own family long ago. Liam is out leading a hiking group when Tinkerbell, Jackson’s huge Bernese Mountain Dog, suddenly takes off into the forest. Bob, the local black bear, had been nearby last night and Liam ran off after her to make sure she was okay. When Liam accidentally get hurt in the process, Austin Jock, an X-ray tech at the local Urgent Care, went to his rescue. Both men finally realize that that is where they knew each other from. Austin had done X-rays on Liam several times since it turns out that Liam is a bit accident prone. After getting Liam safely back to the main office Austin lets it be known that he is also a bass guitarist for a local cover band and they are playing in town tonight. Liam can’t get enough of Austin and asks him out after seeing Him preform. Things progress rather quickly. Almost too quickly for Austin, who is a bit shy and reserved. Can both men set aside past relationships to see that they may have actually found “the one”?
First off, let me tell you how refreshing it was to have Austin be so reserved and shy. I loved that he was a clean cut, well mannered man with a sweet, clean mouth. This was something of an anomaly for me. Most men it the books I have read have had a pretty colorful vocabulary, especially in the heat of passion. I think Liam was as surprised as I was when he actually made a rather racy demand.
I wasn’t sure how the relationship was going to turn out since both men were bi-sexual and I wasn’t sure that they saw themselves with another man long term. That is where I was pleasantly surprised. They both seemed to want “more” out of each other, even if they found it difficult to comprehend and express at times, especially Austin. It was sweet how thoughtful and considerate Liam was of Austin, being willing to go as slow as he needed. I was a bit concerned about how protective Jackson was of Liam but I eventually figured out that he took the “big brother” role very seriously and just wanted to make sure that Liam was going to be okay and not hurt.
This was a great introduction to the brothers and I have a feeling that each book will be about one of the men’s story. I look forward to getting to know each of them more closely and hopefully get to see Liam and Austin more too. This was a sweet, fast paced, low angst story that I really enjoyed and can’t wait for the next book.
